George (20-3), out of Gresham OR's Team Quest, will be
fighting in his home state of OK this Sat, Mar 19th when
he takes on Brazilian fighter Wilson Reis, in a
quarterfinal bout of Bellator's 145lb tourney, aired live
nationwide on MTV2. Zac spoke to NW Fightscene's Spaniard
last week about the fight with Reis and more..
NWFS: You
come from Team Quest, world renowned camp. Talk about what
you've gone through to get ready for you're fight with
Wilson.
George: I
went up to Oregon and I trained, in early February. Four
weeks in up there. And I brought back Dave Jansen, so we're
training here for the next week. And then fight week
starts Monday. Training will kind of ramp down towards the
end of this week or early coming next week. And then
Robert [Follis] flies in to corner for the fight.
NWFS: Are
you a guy that watches a lot of tape on your opponent?
George: I've
watched a little bit of
tape, thanks to the guys up there getting me the tape. I appreciate it. But I don't like to study it too
in-depth. I like to get an idea. Is he southpaw? What's
his height? What's his build? Does he
throw 1-2 all the time. But I don't get a whole lot more than just
surface area in watching tape.
NWFS:
How do you think your styles match up going into this
fight?
George: It matches up really well for me, and really bad for
the Brazilian. Its going to be a lot of fun. He's going to
have to get this fight to the ground to really put it in
his comfort zone. And I'm not uncomfortable there at all... I don't care. I'm pretty
comfortable in most positions. I'm not going to give him
full mount or my back. But outside of starting in those two positions,
I think I got
a real good shot wherever this fight goes.
NWFS: A lot of people might not know you. You're an IFL veteran
and you come from Team Quest. You've had a lot of fights,
now at 20-3. What got you into MMA?
George: I
wrestled from age 5 until I graduated high school. And I
had a boxing coach in high school, a former boxer. And I
started boxing, literally the next weekend, mostly just
fighting other dudes in my little town. I'm from a little country
town, La Tonga. And I got a couple offers to wrestle and I
was like "I really like this boxing thing". Without
any formal training. Again, just working with another guy.
And I really liked that, so when I went to University of
Oklahoma, I went up and found a local gym that had
kickboxing, and supposedly a pretty good gym. So I started
fighting there. Won a national title the first year I was
kickboxing. Beat up a bunch of former amateur world champs
and national champs. And then started boxing, without the
kicks, and made it almost as a representative in the
Olympics, but I got beat up getting into the last couple of
fights there. And then started to put it all together. Ran
into [Matt] Lindland, and kind of moved up to Portland.
NWFS: Anyone
you want to thank?
George: Yeah.
Revgear has always been behind me. They've been awesome. So
appreciate them.
Also been working with Energy Balance wristbands as well. They've been
helping out. All my sponsors, check them out on my Facebook. They're listed up there. Thanks for everybody
getting me ready, Team Quest especially.
