UFC 132: Cruz vs Faber - July 2nd, 2011

MGM Grand Arena - Las Vegas, Nevada

The MGM Grand in Las Vegas hosted yet another incredible UFC fight card on Saturday July 2nd with UFC 132: Cruz vs Faber. Things started off at a measured pace with the first 4 fights ending in decision after decision. This included the opening bout featuring NW Bantamweight Jeff "Hellbound" Hougland picking up a solid win in his Octagon debut by beating opponent Donny Walker both on the feet and ground.

However, once the preliminary Spike TV card started, the pace completely changed. Australian George Sotiropoulos, fighting out of Vancouver WA, faced Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos at 155 lbs. Unfortunately for Sotiropoulous, the bout didn't make it past the one minute mark as Dos Anjos landed a huge right hand that dropped the Aussie fighter and the pace for the evening was now set!

Not to be outdone, Melvin "The Silent Assassin" Guillard came out and KO'd Shane Roller by landing a left hook, a big knee, and then swarming on Roller with hammer fists that put Roller out cold at 2:12 in the very first round.

"Knockout of the Night" honors went to Carlos Condit, who proved he deserves to be in the running for the Welterweight title, by finishing undefeated South Korean fighter Dong Hyun Kim. Condit landed a flying knee and then continued his assault with punches on the ground as Kim lay crumpled against the fence. Carlos took home the victory at 2:58 of the first and the KO bonus which was the only one awarded in that category in a night of KO's.

The Huntington Beach Bad Boy, Tito Ortiz, with his job on the line, returned with a vengeance by defeating young lion, Ryan Bader. Ortiz came out patient waiting for Bader to make his move and rocked Bader with a one two shot. Ortiz then snagged an Arm-in Guillotine Choke getting Bader to tap at 1:56 in the first round and giving Ortiz "Submission of the Night". The MGM crowd went nuts as Ortiz is still loved by so many UFC fans. It's also obvious he still has a lot of fight left in him.

NW Fightscene had to be there for this one! NW fan favorite and Oregon native, Chris "The Crippler" Leben, now training out of Hawaii, was entering his 19th fight in the UFC since his beginning on the very first season of Spike TV's The Ultimate Fighter. And for this one, Leben was taking on no other than MMA great Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva. Beforehand this bout was dubbed "The Fight of the Decade" by UFC fans and media members for its potential fireworks as both fighters are known head hunters and KO kings that love to stand and trade. The Las Vegas crowd was all Wand, which afterwards Leben said surprised him and pumped him up even more for the fight. Wand came out and landed a clean hard right on Leben which got things going. But that was the beginning of the end as Leben fired back and landed with some uppercuts that sent Wand to the canvas and to sleep at just 27 seconds in.

The main event was a re-match between two heated rivals in UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and former WEC champion Urijah Faber. The two talked plenty of trash pumping the fight up beforehand, and clearly they did not like each other. When the bout started, both fighters came out with guns a-blazing and for 25 minutes fought at an incredible high pace.

This was a very close back and forth action packed championship bout that nobody was in agreement upon once it ended, even in the media section it was 3-2 Cruz or 3-2 Faber. What everyone did agree upon was that these little guys went the distance in an amazing scrap that was a shoo-in for "Fight of the Night" honors. But in the end, the only opinions that mattered were the three judges who all saw the bout for the Champion Dominick Cruz. The two are now tied at 1 win apiece against each other and only time will tell if we will see a third match. But one thing is for sure, the 135'ers have arrived!
