UFC 150 Henderson vs Edgar II - August 11th, 2012

Pepsi Center - Denver, Colorado

Review by Spaniard, Photos by Mike Renouard

Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar II was supposed to be the fight that ended the talk and finalized who reigned supreme at 155 pounds. Yet, leaving the Pepsi Center in Denver, we have more questions than answers. After a great outing from both athletes, 2 of the 3 judges saw the bout for the defending champ Henderson as the crowd erupted in boos when the judge's decision was announced.

One of those judges being local NW referee Dave Hagen who along with fellow judge Mark Van Tine scored it 3 rounds out of 5 for Henderson with the final tally reading 48-47, 48-47, 46-49. Many an observer called it a robbery but in the end the fight's in the books and Henderson remains the champ.

Before the amazing 5 round main event, there was the Co-main event barn burner between Melvin Guillard & Donald Cerrone! Guillard came out hot as usual, throwing everything but the kitchen sink, and landed a nice knee on Cerrone. Cerrone kept his composure though and took it right back at Guillard, catching him with a beautiful kick to a right hand that dropped Guillard out cold and earned "The Cowboy" a cool $120,000 in fight bonuses. The pro-Cerrone crowd went nuts with this KO and Fight of the Night, and rightfully so as it was truly amazing to watch!

Jake Shields went up to middleweight to face TUF semifinalist Ed "Short Fuse" Herman. The two had a war of the clinch as both were grinding it out for positioning. Herman seemed to want to keep Shields in a dirty boxer clinch to score points throwing shorts elbows, but Shields had other plans tossing Herman to the ground. At one point in the fight, Shields mounted Herman but Herman successfully escaped and the battling continued until the bell with the judges scoring it a unanimous decision for the California native Jake Shields.

Yushin Okami, a training partner of Team Quest's Chael Sonnen, took on Buddy Roberts who claimed pre-fight that he would put away Okami and prove he belonged in the division. After this fight, I doubt he proved he belonged in Strikforce. Robert's only chance was striking as Okami was dropping his hands and planting his feet, but once Okami took the fight to the ground it was all Okami. Okami took his time which he will likely work on in training as he definitely had chances to finish Robert faster, saying as much in his post fight statements. But still a win is a win and Okami did just that by TKO at 3:09 in the 2nd round.

Fighters Tom Hayden and Dennis Bermudez grappled their way back and forth to the Pespi Center crowd's oohs and aahs, this including a big knee from Hayden that briefly dropped Bermudez.

Yet it was Dennis Bermudez who call checkmate on Tom Hayden by sinking a standing guillotine at 4:43 in the first and taking home Submission of the Night bonus from Dana White post-fight.

In the opening fight on the main card, 20 year old Max Holloway took over late in the 2nd in a close back-and-forth fight that saw both he and Justin Lawrence landing strikes. It was a wicked shot to the liver from Holloway that set up the finish though, with the young fighter gettting the TKO win at 4:49 in the round.

Middlweights Michael Kuiper and Jared Hamman had a true slobberknocker on the prelim card, with Kuiper repeatedly connecting with Hamman's face and head causing the Denver-based fighter to fight the bout drunken monkey style as he staggered around the cage. And fight he did, on more than one occasion, coming back from the edge to rock the Dutch fighter Kuiper with counterstrikes. In the end though, he ate too many shots and crumpled to the canvas for a TKO stoppage at 2:16 of the 2nd.

Jackson MMA fighter Erik Perez scored the fastest KO in UFC/WEC history for the bantamweight divison by connecting with a solid right to the chin of Ken Stone at just 17 seconds into their fight.
