The Regional Sports Center in Springfield, Oregon played host to the
first "Throwdown" put on by Midtown MMA & Brass Knuckles Promotions. The night held two pro fights and two amateur title bouts, plus an array of talented
amateur fighters stemming from numerous NW fight camps on
the undercard. Throwdown showcased just how deep the talent pool is in the amateur ranks of the Pacific NW with some very exciting and action packed fights.
Brent Primus, who's been cross training at Megaton, NW Training Center, and NW Martial Arts won a quick and decisive victory over Kut Throat
Committee fighter Chris Ensley by Rear Naked Choke at 1:05 of the first
round in this pro bout at 160 lbs. Ensley came out and blocked a roundhouse kick
(which later on determined might have broke his forearm), then got the take down but that turned out to be a big mistake. Primus snuck out of the head and arm Ensley had
and secured Ensley's back, trapping his arm in the process
which left Ensley to defend the choke one-handed. It wasn't long before
Primus got the tap and was given the victory.
Fight of the night honors go to Midtown MMA's Tyrone Angolia and NW Warriors Shorty
"The Pitbull" Weikel in their Pro 145 lb battle. Both of these guys battled
non-stop from bell to bell. Weikel was getting the takedowns and controlling on the ground, but Angolia was slipping out of the submission attempts and swimming through punches
well. He even scored some sick reversals, unfortunately
though only to be swept back. In the third and final round both fighters mouths
were open wide and pulling for breath as the ref sounded the round. Angolia
kept Weikel at bay with push kicks and leg kicks, and when
Weikel shot in for a take-down Angolia turned a sweet reversal and
got mount that put Weikel in considerable trouble. But Weikel
scrambled and turned the tides again to get top position, this time
being the last. Weikel took Angolia's back, trapped an arm,
and then fired away hammer fisting and punching till he saw an opening to sink a Rear Naked Choke. The final time was 4:11 in the 3rd round improving Shorty's pro record to 3-0.
Jason Appleton of Impact Jiu-jitsu took home the 170lb Amateur title after defeating Competitors Club fighter Rod Jaques by TKO at 2:49 in the first round. The Referee stepped in and called the fight after Appleton had Jaques trapped and taking a ton of punishment with no answer.
After being away from MMA for a year, NW Training Center's Franky Streeter
came in and successfully defended his 135 lb Title against a tough Bully Breed fighter named James Volini. Volini stayed in a tough fight
with Streeter, but eventually got trapped in a crucifix
& then a Kimura, tapping out with only 10 seconds left in the
2nd round.
Seth Dawson from NW Martial Arts got the fastest
submission of the night choking out Zack Saultz by RNC in 55 seconds. Dawson came out and
slammed Saultz to the mat and from there it was all Dawson as he secured the choke victory in stunning fashion.
Fastest Hands of the night had to go to Kane Dixion as he put on a speed clinic going to town on a unbelievably resilient opponent in Kyle Benston. Benston took much punishment
and it was amazing he didn't drop to any of the punches or kicks he ate to the face and head numerous times.
But he stayed in the fight, bloodied and beaten with no quit
it him, as Dixion continued to land over and over again until referee Dave Hagen stepped in and called the fight at 1:01 in the 2 round.
Another beautiful TKO win came from Competitor's Club fighter Lingo Diaz's win over Alex Blasing. Diaz landed some well timed
knees that Blasing had no answer for. It took lingo 1:52 to finish the fight and improve to 2-0.
Midtown MMA didn't go home winless as Cory Wyatt got back to his winning ways after a tough loss in the FCFF,
earning a TKO victory over Jason Smith from NW Training Center. Wyatt made the ref step in and
stop the bout at 2:24 of the 2nd Rd.
