Spokane Showdown 4 - August 18th, 2007

East Central Community Center - Spokane, Washington

Review by RW Pegau

The East Central Community Center in Spokane Washington once again was the spot for the 4th edition of the Spokane Showdown. The Showdown featured kids grappling, kickboxing, and quite a few MMA-style match ups. Promoter Bart Smith had to do a lot of work on the fight card as multiple fighters pulled out, including one who opted out just moments before his match. The MMA matches had only 1 of 12 fights go the distance, a big thrill for the audience.

Kids Grappling:
Kyle Kreuch vs. Ryan Thompson went to a draw after 5 minutes.
Tyler Rugg vs. Ryan Albert. Albert wins one submission to none.

Kickboxing:
Jake Oyler vs. Kyle Dunphy

Oyler dominated the entire fight. He was able to land kicks and punches at will, streaming together combos of 6 and 8 unanswered blows. Though Oyler was striking a lot, not much was getting through. Mid way into the first round, Oyler picks up the temp and Dunphy looks really winded. The second round played out much like the first with Oyler throwing punches and kicks in combination while Dunphy tried mainly to defend. In the third round, Oyler lands a couple brutal punches that rocks Dunphy, and then puts him away with a high kick.

Oyler by TKO round 3

MMA:
Brendan McGuire vs. Ryan Wendt

McGuire comes out and gets a guillotine choke locked on pretty tight, but after some effort, Wendt powers out of it. McGuire continues to control position and then takes his opponent's back and lets loose a barrage of punches that go unanswered.

McGuire by TKO ref stoppage round 1

Ethan Rhoades of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane vs. Shawn Evans of Knockout Kings

Rhoades by guillotine early in round 1

James Billings vs. Mike Caspary

Caspary by guillotine round 1

Thomas Bonette vs. J.R. Campos

These two both had a good wrestling pedigree and they put on the most even match of the night. Campos looked more poised standing, but Bonette never let it stay standing for long. He was able to get the takedowns early and often. Campos seemed to have a slight edge on the ground during the first round but was never able to really attack the fast paced Bonette. The second round both fighters looked tired, but Bonette continued to score takedowns at will. Neither fighter really did any damage to the other.

Bonette wins by split decision

James Parker of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane vs. Jack Miller

Miller represented the geriatric demographic as he took on a likely 40 years younger Parker. Parker got the takedown early and both fighters scrambled for positions with neither one getting much of an upper hand. After about 4 minutes of position battles, a fatigued Miller submits to exhaustion.

Parker by submission- exhaustion

Eddie Fore of TKO Punishment vs. Vance North of Team Cimarron

This was for the Bantamweight title. In what should have been one of the more competitive fights of the evening, Vance North never really let Eddie Fore out of the gate. Fore did start out aggressive, but once it went to the ground, North quickly got Fore's back and went for the RNC. Though Fore did a great job in defending a deep RNC, he was never able to get into a good position. North transitions into an armbar from a scramble and Fore taps out.

North by armbar round 1 to become the Spokane Showdown Bantamweight champ.

Armando Baena vs. Phillip Minkel of Knockout Kings

Minkel survives two really big slams and locks on a guillotine choke to beat Baena.

Minkel by guillotine round 1

Jared Kanally of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane vs. Bryce Beeler

Kanally dislocates his shoulder after throwing his first combination of punches. He winces in pain and looks like he was trying to tie up, but his shoulder is out. He signals to the ref that he is done early in round one.

Beeler by submission- injury round 1

Jon Burtard of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane vs. Joe Noel

Both fighters start very cautious on their feet. Burtard shoots in for a single leg and gets it. He gets mount position and starts firing off punches. Noel seems to have no answer and is eating heavy leather from Burtard. He rolls over and Burtard quickly sinks in a RNC for the win.

Burtard by RNC round 1

Gary Stone of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane vs. Michael Harrison of Knockout Kings

Harrison looked to be in good position early on as he caught Stone in a tight looking guillotine, but Stone powered out. From there it was all Stone as he eventually got a slick looking armbar on his opponent after dominating the ground position.

Stone by armbar round 1

Matt Williams of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane vs. David Velarde

Williams came right out and took Velarde down. From there he was patient and just waited for his opponent to expose an arm, which he did after eating a few punches. Williams took the arm and got the tapout.

Williams by armbar round 1

Justin Holguin vs. Chris Hartz

In a battle of the super heavy weights, these two fighters came out banging early. Hartz ate some shots early and only smiled at his opponent, gesturing for him to hit him some more. Holguin complied and tagged Hartz throughout round one with limited resistance. Round two saw both fighters almost totally gassed out. Holguin pushed the pace and hit a backpedaling Hartz with a right hand that dropped him. Hartz makes no effort to even attempt to get up and the ref stops it right away.

  Holguin by TKO round 2
