Rumble at the Roseland XXV - October 28th, 2006 Post Fight Review Roseland Theater - Portland, OR Review by Steve "Spaniard" Roberts Full Contact Fight Federation returned to Portland for Rumble at The Roseland XXV. The ghost and ghouls were out in abundance for the Halloween weekend and plenty of mask wearing fight fans packed the Roseland for a night full of great fights.
This long running amateur show is put on by FCFF Promoter, Chael Sonnen. A veteran UFC fighter training with Team Quest, one of MMA's most accomplished fight teams, Sonnen has perfected his Vale Tudo fighting style under the watchful eyes of Olympic silver-medalist Matt Lindland, four-time UFC champion Randy Couture, and Pride idol Dan Henderson. Chael Sonnen recently made it on the BodogFight TV Series, and has made it very clear he intends on being the "toughest fighter on the show."
Scott "The School Teacher" Trayhorn, dropped a weight class to try to attain another FCFF belt. But standing in his way was a tough kid named "Big Country" Kyle Prather who held the FCFF 170lb belt. Trayhorn got the take down into half guard, and a hard left opened up the transition into side mount. Trayhorn moved well and consistently looked to improve position even taking mount at one point in the round landing some hard punches from top position. Prather tried to go out the back door, but Trayhorn immediately attempted to take his back. Trayhorn was putting Prather on the defensive the whole time and Round One ended up in a "saved by the bell" scenario when Trayhorn sunk a deep arm-bar and time ran out. Round Two we saw a spinning back fist attempt by Trayhorn that ended up in a takedown for the Team Quest fighter, but after a couple no action calls from referee Dave Hagen the fight was stood up. Another takedown from Trayhorn put Prather on his back again searching for guard, and an answer to Trayhorns barrage of punches. Trayhorn scored a lot of points in this round for dominate top control, and shots landed. The School Teacher proved to be too much for Big Country and received the Unanimous decision victory to become the new FCFF Welterweight champion.
"Brutal" Brad Horner, successfully defended his title against Reality Combat fighter Bobby Corpuz. Brutal Brad made quick work of Corpuz finishing the fight in 1:54 by referee stoppage. Shortly after his victory Horner was challenged by Desert Dog fighter Tomi "Last Minute" Massey. The champ will be turning pro soon so he had to turn the fight down, but the FCFF said the will bring Massey in, so look forward to a new matchup of Lightweight contenders.
Aaron Sutton by transitioning from a Triangle choke to arm-bar beautifully, and forcing Sutton to tap at 3:08 in the first round.
fighter Josh "Good Ole Boy" Bennett. Pope looked to land some haymakers but Bennett stayed poised and capitalized quickly finishing Pope by TKO in a 1:30 of the first round to take a 2-0 record in the Bennett vs. Pope saga. But wait, there's more! Jim's brother and former FCFF champ, Carl Pope, claimed he will be returning to the cage to get redemption for the Pope family. We will see what the future holds for these two men, and it will be interesting to see if Carl Pope has
any cage rust after not competing for awhile. fought Sean "Devastator" Siefke from New Breed Jiu-jitsu. This was an amazing match up, and both fighters gave it everything they had. Siefke seemed to be a little more dominating on the ground but Culbertson always seemed to have a little more at the end of the rounds. There was one point were Siefke took Culbertson's back and while defending the choke, Culbertson was talking to a fan sitting next to the cage smiling saying "it's ok, I'm ok." At another point they were in a standing north south position and Siefke tried doing a back slam that got the crowd on their feet. The first round had to go to Siefke while the second went to Culbertson, and this fight was scored a draw. This will definitely be the re-match to watch. Both fighters have a lot of heart and technique. fighter Tyson Jeffries and what a war this was! Both fighters were in good shape and ready to bang. After a tough exchange and a small intermission due to cage issues, the fight was started again and the warriors got right to it. Norris absolutely rocked the 17 year old kid from Team Quest, but Jeffries has definitely got a chin as he withstood the blow. After regaining his composure Jeffries took Norris's back. Norris had great choke defense, but after a fight Jeffries sunk it and got the tap at 1:51 of
