Coga-MMA
& the Snoqualmie Casino presented Rumble on the Ridge 20 this
past October 15th with yet another sold out fight night featuring
8 amateur and 3 pro MMA matchups. The NW's own Miesha Tate -
who also happens to be the Strikeforce Women's 135 lb World
Champion - was in the house doing the color commentary alongside
Jeff "The Fish" Aaron for the live stream on
Fightflixx.com and for the re-broadcast on Root Sports (Fri Oct
21st 10 PM). Joining them was Miesha's boyfriend, Bryan "Kid
Lightning" Caraway, who is a cast member on the current
season of The Ultimate Fighter airing Wednesday nights on Spike
TV.
In
the main event, it was Landon "The Show" Showalter -
making his final MMA appearance after a 12 year career - going up
against MMA veteran Shonie "Mr International" Carter.
The fight started out slow, with both fighters giving each other a
lot of room and a lot of respect. This brought out the boos with
fans looking for action and prompting ref Anthony Hamlett to warn
both fighters that points would be taken away if they didn't start
engaging. They picked up the pace a bit, trading a couple punches
and kicks with the round ending with a kick to the midsection by
Carter and then Showalter getting a takedown. In the 2nd round,
Carter snuck through a punch that got Showalter to the ground and
there Carter was able to maintain top control while scoring with
punches and submission attempts. The third round was similar to
the second with Carter winning both the standup and the ground
game. Showalter never stopped working from the bottom, looking for
submissions of his own while trying to escape Carter's attack.
However, The Show wasn't able to turn the tide and the night
belonged to Shonie Carter who picked up his 50th official pro
victory via unanimous judges decision.
In
a pro heavyweight contest, "The Freight Train" Anthony
Hamilton took on debuting 503 West Coast Jiu-jitsu fighter, Rath
Cyrus. With Hamilton winning all three 5 minute rounds via take
downs and a steady grinding attack on the ground, this was not a
close fight. However, Cyrus hung in and showed tremendous heart in
keeping in the fight and avoiding the finish. Hamilton, who trains
out of Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque and Foster BJJ in Auburn,
remains undefeated as a pro moving to 5-0.
In
a pro 170 lb contest, Josh Calvo looked extremely impressive in
beating an excellent ground practitioner in Joel Pettit by Rear
Naked Choke in the first round. Calvo, training under UFC fighter
Jeff Hougland and BJJ Black Belt James Foster, got an early
takedown then laid down a blistering ground attack before sinking
in the choke. With the win, Calvo moves to 5-1 as a pro.
There
were 8 amateur bouts on the fight card, including the 135 lb
Championship between Charlie Combat Club's Billy Walker and
Full Circle Fight Club's Jonathon Moore. The bout started with
both fighters circling and showing patience while measuring
distance. It was Moore who closed the gap, landing a nice body
shot and then forcing Walker against the cage with a small flurry.
Walker though came off the fence firing and caught Moore on the
button, sending him to the canvas and eliciting a huge gasp from
the crowd. Moore instinctively went into a defensive posture but
Walker came in fast and hard and connected on a couple more
punches before referee Anthony Hamlett stepped in and stopped it
at 2:18 of the first round.
