Ring Rage II - March 11th, 2006

7 Cedars Casino - Sequim, Washington

Review by Chris Hoernlein,  Photos by Mike Rhine & Mike Renouard

The 7 Cedars Casino played host to a high octane evening of MMA and Kickboxing

bouts brought to the rabid fight fans of the Olympic Peninsula by K.O. Promotions

and the X-Fighting Championships, and sanctioned by USA Mixed Martial Arts.

People were lined up thick to get in to see this sold-out event but the wait was

well worth it as the crowd got to witness some great displays of athleticism,

speed, and raw power in the 10 matchups that took place. The production

was put on by Last Call Entertainment, who set up 2 big screens showing

the tale of the tape of each fighter and then live shots of the fights, so

no matter were you were, you saw the action.  Top that off with comfortable

seats and the adult refreshments available, and you have a great way

to spend a Saturday Night!  Be sure to get your tickets early for Ring Rage III

to be held at the 7 Cedars Casino on July 8th.

Bout 1: MMA

Leo Rohner (Northwest Kenpo Karate - Spokane, WA) defeated

Jesse James Young (Jackknife Vale Tudo - Castle Rock, WA)  by TKO (strikes), 1:01 Rd 1

The first fight of the night started off fast and ended fast for the debut of Jesse James Young.  Leo Rohner was able to quickly overwhelm him on his feet until getting the big takedown, obtaining the mount and finishing the fight on top with a ref stoppage for a TKO by strikes.

Bout 2: MMA

Gene Bond (Victory Athletics - Tenino, WA) defeated

Colby Hoffman (Twin Dragons - Aberdeen, WA) by  tapout (armbar), 2:29 Rd 1

The second bout featured two fast 155lbs fighters in an exciting MMA fight and my pick for submission of the night. Colby Hoffman came in throwing big wide punches trying to finish the fight early with the homerun punch but it was Gene Bond who got the big -  and I mean BIG - takedown to take him to the ground. Not giving up easily,  Hoffman got back to his feet and again threw hard punches but he couldn't get one to land flush and got taken to the mat again. Bond mounted him from there and starting raining down the punches until he attempted an arm bar. After a wide scramble and several reversals, Gene Bond got the arm locked and forced Colby Hoffman to tap out with 30 seconds left in round 1.

Bout 3: Kickboxing

Kyle Keeney (East Lacey, WA) defeated

Jake Blair (Northwest Kenpo Karate - Spokane, WA) by KO (spinning backfist), 0:48 Rd 2

The only KO of the night came in this battle of Light Heavyweight kickboxers. Both Kyle Keeney and Jake Blair came out throwing hard leather in the first round, but it was Blair who was able to score points as he used his speed and reach to land jabs, crosses and kicks to the ribs against the shorter but more powerful Keeney. The round ended with Keeney having taken a lot of damage while only landing a few punches.  Round 2 started off like 1st with Blair using his size to beat Keeney to the punch.  However,  Keeney got in close enough to attempt a huge spinning back fist with landed true, knocking Blair to the mat. After a standing 8 count, referee Dennis Hallman had to stop the fight giving Kyle Keeney the KO.

Bout 4: MMA

Rex Payne (Curt's Ultimate Fitness - Portland, OR) defeated

Eddie Louder (Jackknife Vale Tudo - Castle Rock) by Rear Naked Choke, 0:38 Rd 1

Don't blink folks as this was the flyweights coming in at 138lbs in another MMA fight. Rex Payne wasted no time by landing a big punch early, causing Louder to turn around long enough so he could take his back while standing. After they both fell to the ground it didn't take long for Payne to lock in the rear naked choke.  Louder tried throwing punches before having to tap at: 38 seconds of the first round.

Bout 5: MMA

Matt May (5-Deuce Posse - Boise, ID) defeated

Adam Smith (Jackknife Vale Tudo - Castle Rock, WA) by TKO (strikes), 2:55 Rd 1

Another MMA bout featuring fast flyweights started off at a furious pace with incredible back and forth action as both Adam Smith and Matt May were able to land punches and knees from a standing position. May was able to land more however and eventually took Smith to the ground where he mounted him, pinned his right arm under his leg and punched his way to victory by getting a stoppage with only 5 seconds left in the first round.

Bout 6: Novice Kickboxing

Dylan Stanley (Gig Harbor Kickboxing - Gig Harbor, WA) vs. Arron Groell (Northwest Kenpo Karate - Spokane, WA) ended in a Draw (29-28, 28-29, 29-29)

This kickboxing match was full of action as both fighters traded punches and kicks in round 1. Round 2 had Dylan Stanley putting more combos together while Arron Groell tried to land big punches. In round 3, Stanley's superior conditioning was apparent as he continued to look fresh and land combos on the slower and fatigued Groell.  However, neither fighter could finish the other off so it came down to the first decision of the night. Judge one had it 29-28 for Stanley, Judge 2 scored it 29-28 for Groell (here come the boos) and judge 3 had it 29-29 making it a controversial draw. The sold out crowd booed the decision.

Bout 7: MMA

Justin Larson (Twin Dragons - Aberdeen, WA) defeated

Johnny Hoffman (5-Deuce Posse - Boise, ID) by Rear Naked Choke, 2:42 Rd 2

After a short intermission the crowd was ready and so were these two great warriors. The intense stare down of the fighters brought cheers from the crowd in anticipation of a great battle and what turned out to be the fight of the night. Justin Larson scored first with a big takedown on Hoffman but Hoffman was able to keep Larson under control in his guard. The fight was stopped and Larson had a point deducted when, in trying to escape Hoffman's tight guillotine attempt, he poked Hoffman in the eye.  The furious action resumed and in round 2, neither fighter slowed down.  Larson got one of the best and most emphatic takedowns of the night and once on the ground he was able to use his power to pass Hoffman's guard and take control from there. After mounting him, he threw enough strikes to make Hoffman give up his back, so Larson could finish the fight at 2:45 in round 2 by rear naked choke. Be sure to keep an eye out for BOTH of these powerful 170lb fighters!

Bout 8: MMA

Carmen Cassella (Northwest Kenpo Karate - Spokane, WA) defeated

J.C. Doane (Independent - Port Angeles, WA) by tapout (armbar), 1:26 Rd 1

Both fighters came in to this MMA bout at 185lbs, but Carmen Cassela was the superior fighter with better striking and more power.  Cassella took Doane down to the mat, got the mount and then quickly got the armbar to force Doane to tapout.

Bout 9: MMA

James Marohl (Jackknife Vale Tudo - Castle Rock, WA) defeated

Jason Garman (Independent - Sequim, WA) by Rear Naked Choke, 0:40 Rd 2

This bout featured the hometown hero Jason Garman who, standing at 5'9" 170lbs,  faced a very tall 6'3" and talented fighter in James Marohl.  Marohl used his size well, out striking Garman and beating him to the punch with jabs and crosses. Once on the ground Marohl continued to deliver punishment and protect himself from his back as Garman could only get a few good punches in. Round one ended with Marohl mounted on Garman with almost having the ref stop the fight due to strikes. In round 2, Marohl continued to over power Garman and was able to finish him on the ground with a rear naked choke.

Main Event - Full Muay Thai Rules

Jeff Dietrich (5-Deuce Posse - Boise, ID) defeated

Cedric Marks (Independent - Bremerton, WA) by Majority Decision

This kickboxing match had two 185lb warriors ready for battle.  Jeff Dietrich came out hard with a full-on charging style while the deliberate Cedric Marks countered with well placed shots here and there. In each round, Dietrich delivered strikes and knees from the clinch while Marks picked his shots from the outside. Unfortunately for Marks, he received not just one, nor two, but three knees to the groin, once in each round. They were ruled unintentional so Dietrich was not penalized and in the end his aggression gave him a majority decision win.
