Rumble at the Roseland 67 - November 10th, 2012

Roseland Theater - Portland, Oregon

The 67th Rumble at the Roseland took place at the Roseland Theater in Portland OR Saturday night, Nov 10th. Celebrating their 10th year of amateur fights, the FCFF's famous yellow-canvased "Slammer" saw it's first pro fight in the promotion's history with a heavyweight grudge match between Trent Standing and Josh McPherson. The fight immediately went to the ground with Standing on top, looking to smother McPherson.

McPherson never quit, working his way loose of Standing and reversing position before unleashing a volley of head strikes to win the TKO victory at 2:42 into round 1.

In the Main Event, Dylan Atkinson (Alive MMA) and Journey Newson (Impact JJ) battled for the 135 lb title. Both fighters pushed a great pace through all five rounds of the fight. Atkinson kept control of the center of the ring, trying to land strikes on the circling Newson. They both threw good straight punches, but with their footwork, neither were able to land much. Atkinson started jumping forward with left hooks, cutting Newson off and pushing him to the cage wall. Atkinson got the takedown, but Newson wall-walked back to his feet while pulling Atkinson into a guillotine. Atkinson dragged Newson back down and postured out of the choke just as the round ended. In the second, Newson got a double leg off the cage and landed in Atkinson's guard. Newson landed some punches as Atkinson struck from his back. They transitioned back and forth for top position before Atkinson regained his feet and threw a knee to the body before the bell sounded. In the next round, Atkinson took over on the takedowns and managed to climb onto Newson's back, fighting to sink in a rear naked choke. Newson stood and continued to hand fight, secured one of Atkinson's wrists and back-flopped - slamming Atkinson to the mat. Newson managed to loosen Atkinson's hooks enough to spin into guard. When Newson went to pass, Atkinson popped up to his feet. Newson grabbed for the guillotine again but ran out of time. The fourth and fifth rounds were a stalemate on the feet, but a takedown clinic by Atkinson. Newson defended well on the ground, not taking damage, but couldn't out-wrestle Atkinson. At the end of five hard-fought rounds, the judges unanimously handed the belt to Atkinson.

While there weren't any knock outs, John Simon (BGCC) ended his 185 lb fight against Daniel Pihl (Vernonia OR) with a vicious knee that dropped Pihl to the canvas. A well-matched fight, the two had some nice exchanges in the clinch and on the ground, and were still battling back and forth for control when they were stood up for Simon's grabbing onto the cage. Looking to quickly make up for it, Simon eluded knees thrown by Pihl and returned one of his own. It connected solidly and put a rocked Pihl to the mat with just two seconds left in the fight.

Submission of the night went to Kody Hammond (Alive MMA) against Ismail Bassam (Bridgeport). The fast-paced 155'ers looked to feel each other out with clean combos that were light on the power. When Bassam tried for a head kick and slipped, Hammond pounced and took mount. Bassam fought back to his feet and circled back into position for another head kick that landed on Hammond's jaw. Unfortunately Bassam didn't commit to the kick and Hammond slipped in for the takedown. Once in side control, Hammond struggled to keep Bassam from rolling away as he locked in an Americana, finally getting Bassam to tap at 2:48 of round 1.

The Fight of the Night had the judges declaring a split decision in the 125 lb match-up of David Converse (Lincoln City) and Brian Tsutsumi (Impact JJ). Converse started out strong with good striking and knees, and submission attempts on the gound. Tsutsumi spiked Converse on his head a few times looking to escape from armbars, and managed to survive until the bell rang. In the second, Converse continued to work for submissions as Tsutsumi rained punches to the head and body. Round three began with Converse holding the center of the cage with some stiff jabs until Tsutsumi rushed him to the wall into a clinch. Tsutsumi unloaded a barrage of knees and strikes on the exhausted Converse. Trapped with his back to the cage, Converse slipped as best he could as Tsutsumi wore himself out punching. With 10 seconds left in the fight, Tsutsumi went in for the guillotine, but Converse took side control and didn't need to rely on the clock to run out in order to
stay safe. A good fight throughout, the unanswered punches at the end of the third gave the edge to Tsutsumi for the split decision win.
