The FCFF, headed by UFC Superstar Chael Sonnen and FCFF Matchmaker/Ring Announcer Kevin Keeney, put together another epic Rumble at the Roseland on March 10th, holding 22 amateur fights inside "The Slammer". The organization has entered its eleventh year and is stronger than ever, with top talent from around the NW and beyond lining up to get the opportunity to test their mettle under the bright lights at the Roseland Theater in downtown Portland. It is no wonder then that the promotion has won the NW Fightscene Amateur Promotion of the Year for Oregon once again. After the event, Kevin Keeney accpeted the award from NW Fightscene's Spaniard and talked about The FCFF.
In the main event, 503 West Coast Jiu-jitsu's John Bartlett was making the 2nd defense of his FCFF Middleweight belt, this time against an undefeated Bryson French out of Impact Jiu-jitsu. French came out hard and punished Bartlett for two rounds with a good mix of standup and ground attack. Bartlett actually had a point taken in the first round for an illegal knee on the ground and so entering the third round it was either finish French or lose the belt. And finish French is exactly what Bartlett did as the pair went to the canvas and Bartlett locked in a beautiful Armbar. After the win, Bartlett talked about the fight with NW Fightscene's Spaniard...
503WCJJ's Damion Martindale took on a much taller Darren O'Donnell in a Heavywight Superfight. No secret then that Martindale's plan was to get O'Donnell to the ground and work to do damage there. O'Donnell did will in the first round keeping it standing but as the fight progressed, Martindale was able to get it to the mat and grind away, wearing down O'Donnell. Late in the final round, Martindale slipped in an Arm Triangle and put O'Donnell to sleep for the win and yet another piece of hardware to add to his collection.
In a battle for the Featherweight Interim Title, Damon Jordan proved to be too much for The Barn MMA's Travis Sue, securing a Rear Naked Choke win midway through the third round.
In a 170 lb contest, Alliance MMA's Chris Holiday went for the takedown but Team Quest's Buzz Alderman showed the crowd the true meaning of the word sprawl, catching Holiday's neck in the process and locking in the standing guillotine choke at 2:33 of the first.
The Barn MMA's John Baker locked on a sweet looking armbar and got Dylan Westwang to tap at 1:11 of the first in their 160 lb catchweight bout.
Next Level MMA's Nick Becker submitted Chris Gillespie via armbar at 52 seconds into their 145 lb contest.
Jason Gray, who placed 2nd in the nation wrestling for Highline Community College near Seattle in 2011, turned his 155 lb bout with Abraham Campos into a takedown clinic. Gray wasnt able to do much damage on the ground once it got there, but Campos was unable to stop the numerous crowd-pleasing slams and all three judges saw it 30-27 for Gray.
The FCFF's next evet is scheduled for April 28th with the Throwdown at Thurston in Springfield OR. The event will benefit the Thurston High Wrestling Team. On May 19th, the promotion returns to the Roseland Theater with Rumble at the Roseland 63. More info at thefcff.com.
