& event review by Spaniard, Photos by Todd Schwartz
Portland,
OR - The Full Contact Fight Federation held its 59th Rumble at the Roseland show this
past weekend, with 18 Mixed Martial Arts bouts bringing together some of the best amateur fighters in the Pacific Northwest and beyond to compete in the cage.
The main and co-main bouts were title fights of epic proportions, placing four tough amateurs in line to fight over two titles and see who was the
best of the NW. There were two female bouts as well: one which set a weight record in
Women's MMA at 225 lbs & the other which was the first bout of the evening to reach the
judges after the first 8 fights all ended in finishes!
FCFF
Welterweight Champion Ben Egli successfully defended his title
once again but only after taking a beating in the first and second rounds. His opponent Billy
Denney from Eugene Oregon dominated those rounds, scoring some mean ground and pound,
but Denney wound up getting caught in an Armbar that did him in at 2:16 of the third round.
After the win, Egli announced this he would finally be moving into the professional ranks after a long and successful
amateur run.
Spaniard's pick for "Fight of The Night" went to the Flyweights
in the co-main event: Champion David "Kryptonite" Converse & Challenger Alex Corrales. WOW are we are spoiled in the NW with amazing MMA
fights these, and this one was a great example of what, in my opinion, sets the NW amateur circuit apart from
the others around the country... Guys like Converse and Corrales
going in there at a very high level, after training hard everyday
like pros for months, and putting on a SHOW for no pay! BE THANKFUL FANS!...
Converse came out, and after feeling the quickness in Corrales' punches,
reverted to his State Championship wrestling abilities and took
Corrales down. Converse was the bigger fighter on the ground and kept snagging Corrales in submission attempts.
Yet Corrales would escape and reverse, and then get it back to
standing to land an uppercut that was clean on the money. This fight had it all, but in the end someone has to lose and Converse retained his title by unanimous decision.
"KO of The Night" went to Luis Iniguez from Brave Legion out of Vancouver
WA. who took on tough fighter Bennie Dixon from Alive MMA. After the fight
Dixon, told NWFS he was flashed knocked out in the first round and lost a
tooth. But it was an Iniguez punch at 35 secs into the 2nd round
that landed square to end Dixon's night and give Iniguez the W by vicious KO!
Team Quest submission grappler and now MMA fighter Hillary VanOrnum made her
debut in the cage against Danae Castle who was also fighting for
the first time. Neither girl wanted to touch gloves or wait to feel the fight out at all. Both said let's do this and ran full force at each other till they met in a clash in the center of the
cage. It was VanOrnum that got the better of the exchanges and eventually got the win by TKO @ 1:56 in the second round.
UFC Bantamweight Ian Loveland was on hand, cornering his new team of MMA fighters from
"The Barn MMA" in Scapoose, OR. One of his guys, Travis Sue made short work of his opponent Craig Jordan
by defeating him via Rear Naked Choke at 39 seconds of the very first round.
Afterwards, Travis said he looking for the knockout or TKO, but was
still happy with the win.
Alive MMA fighter Robin Woods went the distance with NW Elite fighter Priscilla White at 135lbs in a bout that had
saw a ton of ground with plenty of reversals. This was the first fight to go to the judges and was
a very technical bout with Woods getting the unanimous decision win. Woods spoke to NWFS
afterwards about her happiness with finally fighting someone her weight and being
seriously tested.
Team Quest fighter Buzz Alderman made his long awaited return to MMA after dealing with some life issues
and feels he is back on track after moving to a better weight for
him. in this bout he took on Scott Baker at 170 lbs instead of 155 and looked like a
beast. Alderman dominated the fight, eventually getting a guillotine
choke finish at 2:33 of round one. He is definitely one to take
serious at 170.
Alive MMA Fighter Austin Hoover took out Jeremiah Cole by RNC at 2:06 of the very first round. Hoover wrestled with Cole in High School
and felt he could handle him in the cage, but it wasn't even an issue as Hoover's stand up game was overwhelming and his ground game took Cole out.
The FCFF will hold their next show in Lincoln City OR with Caged On The
Coast 6 at the Chinook Winds Resort on Nov 5th, and then they are
back in Portland Dec 3rd with Rumble at the Roseland 60. For more info,
