Palace Fighting Championship 13 "Validation" - May 8th, 2009

Tachi Palace Casino & Resort - Lemoore, California

Review and Cell Photos by Steve "Spaniard" Valentine

Lemoore, CA - In case you missed the free live stream provided by the folks at Sherdog.com, Palace Fighting Championship held another stellar filled card dubbed "Validation" Friday night in the Central Valley at the Tachi Palace Casino & Resort. The outside event brought a crowd of mixed emotions as past stars fought to climb back up the ladder; and new ones stepped in the ring looking for their chance to shine.

Former WEC champ Doug "The Rhino" Marshall won a controversial split decision that had the crowd in an uproar. His opponent, Team Carnage fighter Jaime "El Cucui" Jara, took the fight to Marshall pressing the action, and avoiding most of Marshall's lethal power through clinching. Jara had a rough time getting Marshall to the ground however 1st, because Marshall was clearly grabbing the ropes over and over again, and 2nd, because Marshall had great takedown defense. Marshall landed a nice right leg kick to the head of Jara, and scored more damage with his strikes than Jara. So, thankfully we have judges to get mad at, and decide for us even though we might not like the outcome. This would be a good fight to see in a five minute round cage show. Might help as at one point Marshall almost fell outside of the ring on his head. I think the Rhino might need to send a thank you card to the ref for pulling him back in.

Speaking of "pull me back in", former Ultimate Fighter contestant Gabe "Godzilla" Ruediger pulled off a quick Guillotine choke win over Darren Crisp. The fight was over in 1:03, once it hit the mat, Godzilla got the tap. Cobra Kai fighter Eddie "Filipino Phenom" Yagin got a similar victory submitting Casey Olsen in 1:16 with a Guillotine choke as well. Yagin landed a huge right that sat Olsen down, and the Filipino Phenom jumped on his neck and cranked it out.

My KO of the night belongs to Team Alpha Male fighter Scott Mcafee, who came out swinging on Oakdale fighter Bill Theofanopolos, and knocked him out in :43 of the second round. Both traded shots in the first with Scott getting the better of Bill using uppercuts and body shots off his combinations. Yet, Bill stayed in the fight, and seemed to turn it up when he was hurt landing shots of his own. Scott landed a huge overhand right dropping Bill, then followed with a left and the fight was in the bag.

After a 2 year layoff of life threatening proportions due to major Staph infection Cole "The Apache Kid" Escavedo won a huge KO victory over Michael Mcdonald. Cole sinks an arm bar at the end of round won screaming "he tapped, he tapped", but the fight wasn't over. Round two started and cole turned it up again knocking out Mcdonald in 2:25 seconds to prove you really can do anything if you believe you can.

Central Valley fan favorite Olaf Alfonso, lost his PFC Welterweight title on his first defense to undefeated NorCal Fighting Alliance fighter Kyle "Humboldt" Pimentel. Pimentel dominated the first round mounting Olaf numerous times, landing vicious elbows cutting Olaf on head and nose. To his credit Olaf is always in tough fights so to say he was in trouble probably wasn't the truth, but he definitely needed some offense. Round two was the same Olaf trying to avoid heavy shots, but once Referee Cecil Peoples stopped the fight to check the cut on Olaf's nose the doctor stopped the fight. Now I understand he was losing, but the cut was the size of a fingernail-he received no stitches, and his nose looked that way before the fight so I don't ask me. Word of advice to fighters; get your nose corrected if it's broken, because if it looks like a curved highway then the doc might perceive it happened in the current fight when you're all bloodied up.

Erin "Steel" Toughill earned a unanimous decision victory over Emily "Time bomb" Thompson; holding it down for women's MMA. Steel used her reach and boxing to keep Emily at bay who was pressing the fight looking for the takedown.

Carlo "Knee-o" Prater became the New PFC Lightweight Champion defeating Dominique Robinson by Unanimous decision. Robinson started landing combinations and pushing the fight, but Prater kept getting the takedowns, working more in the clinch, and scoring more all around. Prater even stopped during the fight to give the camera a smile and thumbs up saying "I'm ok!"

Pat Runez won the PFC Flyweight belt defeating Anthony Perales by Rear Naked Choke in 2:28 of round 2. This fight was light and tight, fast and furious. Both guys going at it, but Runez sunk a tight choke getting the tap and the title.

Some of the nicest cornering I've ever heard came from UFC fighter Mac Danzig, as he was trying to help fellow Extreme Couture fighter John "Guns" Gunderson get out from under fighter Bryan "The Bull" Travers.

Travers looked sharp as he was the bigger stronger wrestler in this fight. Travers kept Gunderson down controlling the fight earning a unanimous decision victory bringing his record to 12-1. For more info on PFC events go to www.palacefightingchampionship.com.
