NW Fight Challenge XIX "Sudden Impact" - April 19th 2014

South Sound Sports Center - Tumwater, Washington

Recap and Photos by Hadley Griffith

NW Promotions in conjunction with The Academy of Brian Johnson held their 19th NW Fight Challenge "Sudden Impact" at the South Sound Sports Center in Tumwater WA on Saturday April 19th. NWFS XIX had 14 amateur fights go down and 7 titles on the line which made for an extremely packed card for the crowd of over 2500 people cheering on the combatants. In the main event, Brian Johnson Fight Team's JD Cullens went deep into his fight with Team Damage's Joe Rodriguez, getting a 5th round kimura submission at 1:36 and winning the 205 lb MMA belt in the process.

The Fight of the Night did not disappoint - Mark Wittig and Colin Garcia raced at each other in the opening seconds of their 170 lb kickboxing match. Garcia, with his extremely heavy hands for any weight class, managed to catch Wittig with stunning blows a couple of times in their match, but Wittig hit hard himself and bloodied up Garcia. Both threw with the speed of 125'rs and landed with damaging accuracy. The crowd was stunned with the fury of the opening 10 seconds of the fight and it never slowed. Starting the second round, both men kept up the pace, but Wittig's accuracy proved lethal and he was able to turn Garcia aside long enough to get the TKO stoppage at 1:28 into the second.

With no KO's on the card, the stand-out TKO of the Night went to Sefo Nansen whose opponent came in over 10 lbs heavy. Nansen was looking to prove a point, and Nuo was on his heels as Nansen came after him with a vengeance. At one point, Nansen even ran off the cage wall in an effort to catch Nuo. Nuo stayed in the fight throwing hands for two rounds, but just 53 seconds into the third, Nansen turned it up and got the TKO for the victory.

Submission of the Night was also the shortest fight of the night in a 155 lb mma title bout between Patrick Benson and Manny Carter. Known for his impressive stand-up, Carter was hoping to trade on the feet and work his takedown defense. Benson wanted no part of Carter's stand-up and shot across the cage in the opening seconds, rushing the takedown. Once on the ground, Benson quickly secured Carter's back and took the rear naked choke, getting the tap 39 seconds into the fight.

In the Middleweight MMA Championship, Team Evolution's Jordan Hyatt scored a quick victory via TKO of Adam Catterlin at 1:28 of the first round.

The 170 lb Muay Thai Title fight was a good battle that saw Rude Awakening's Joe Briggs come out on top by unanimous decision over Jason Swan.

Brian Johnson Fight Team's Julien Martin TKO'd Meeko Johnson at the 1:31 mark of the third round to take home the 155 lb kickboxing belt.

Tainted Misfits' Jose Hernandez won a split decision over Steven Pederson in the 135 lb MMA Title fight.

Combat Sport & Fitness fighter Sean Williams won the 125 lb MMA Title over David Gines by Unanimous Decision.
