NW Fight Challenge XV "Rocked" - October 20th, 2012
Former
Apex Carting Center - Tumwater, Washington
Review by Hadley Griffith
An incredible line up of fighters gathered in Tumwater WA Saturday night for NW Fight Challenge's fifteenth event - "Rocked". With 6 of the 15 amateur fights scheduled as title fights, the best of the best in Washington showed up for battle. The 185lb Championship main event saw Alfonso Gonzales sprint across the cage to take down dangerous striker Mike DeVose. DeVose wrapped Gonzales up and had an arm-in guillotine when they finally hit the canvas, but Gonzales scrambled quickly. DeVose was able to neutralize the strikes, but when he attempted to escape through the backdoor, Gonzales was able to slide backwards and keep DeVose's back. Gonzales slipped in the rear naked choke, but had to hold onto it for a time while DeVose hand fought. Determined, Gonzales deepened the choke and got the tap at 1:33 in the first round for the win and the belt.
Fight Of The Night AND Submission of the Night both came from the incredible 145lb title match-up between Nick Ryan and Nathan Stolen. The two experienced fighters traded well and non-stop, both standing and on the ground. Mid-way through the first round, Ryan wobbled Stolen with a right uppercut and blitzed attacked the stunned fighter to the cage wall before unloading a vicious onslaught of strikes. Stolen shelled and survived to circle back to the center of the cage. At the end of the round Stolen got his revenge and rocked Ryan with a stiff jab. In the second and third rounds, both fighters kept up a rabid pace standing and on the ground. Ryan kept to the outside of the cage, circling and striking, while Stolen worked to cut off his movement. On the ground Ryan worked into good postions with ground and pound while Stolen transitioned well and fought back hard. Early in the fourth round, Stolen slipped and Ryan rushed in to top position. Neither looking the least tired, they scrambled until Ryan secured the armbar. Stolen stacked at first, but then stood up, wearing Ryan's entire body on his arm. Even after getting spiked twice on his head, Ryan held on, knowing he had the submission and was rewarded with the tap at 1:35 of Round 4.
The Knockout of the Night came quickly in the 170lb match-up of Seth Hannenken and Steven Pedersen. Taking the fight last minute, the lighter Pedersen worked his way into the center of the cage, head moving. Hanneken timed the head movement and slammed home a jab directly to Pedersen's chin, putting him out cold 5 seconds into round one.
The Crowd Favorite went to J.D. Burns and Ricky Satterwhite's 155lb title fight. Both fighters known for their skills, Burns took Satterwhite by surprise with spinning whip kicks to the head, and forward sommersault roll upkicks to the chin. A smart combatant, Satterwhite knew what to look for and was able to defend the creative attacks Burns unleashed. Both did well trading, but Satterwhite stayed composed and kept great range standing and on the ground. On the mat Burns worked off his back seeking kneebars and ankle attacks on his standing opponent, but Satterwhite would fight his way out. Satterwhite had the speed advantage on Burns, and was slowly able to turn the fight his way. When Burns tried for another rolling sommersault kick in the second round, Satterwhite saw his opening and leapt onto Burns. After a short scramble on the ground, Satterwhite sank in a guillotine for the tap at 2:59.
After 2 years out of the cage, Scott McDonald made his return in the highly anticipated 135lb title fight with Tyler Thompson. There was no ring-rust on McDonald as he set a hard pace with even harder strikes and kicks. The two traded well in the first, Thompson looking for the takedowns. McDonald stayed focused and calm, working into good positions for ground and pound. While clinched in the second, McDonald would knee while Thompson threw uppercuts. When the two came back out from the round break, McDonald continued to walk Thompson down, and was able to scramble onto Thompson's back on the ground and slip in the rear naked choke. Thompson was forced to tap 1:39 into the third round.
