M.E.K.A. Challenge - March 24th, 2007

Forest Grove Armory - Forest Grove, Oregon

Writeup provided by the Promoter as written by fight judge Kelly Whitlock

Great show!!!!
Congrats to Troy [O'Conner] and everyone who put it on. It was an honor to be a part of it. First class all the way!!! For people that don't know a lot about MMA, the submission matches gave them a better idea about ground fighting. The Karate part I was skeptical about at first, but turned out to be very exciting to watch. The Aim High guys and their halftime show was really cool (made me want to learn the nunchuks)!!! I hope they will be at the next one also.

Note from Troy O'Conner, Promoter of the M.E.K.A. Challenge:

The next MEKA Challenge will be on April 28th at the Tigard Armory.

It will be simulcast for our troops in Afghanistan as well as be put on the soldiersnet

for all to see. We have many more this year & our first was simply amazing.

Roberto Munoz over Daniel Sikkens
Karate match, fun to watch. Munos has extremely fast feet, leg sweeps. Sikkens had some impressive flying kicks. Lost track of points but Munos obviously won. The only thing that could have made this better was having Chuck Norris himself as the Ref.

(you'll have to work on that Troy...hahaha)

Andy Johnston over Dan "Smalldog" Downard
Smalldog still has fight in him but unfortunately for him it wasn't enough to fend of the guillotine from grandson aged Johnston. Johnston was strong, fast & furious & finished with a huge skyhigh throw to guillotine.

Shane Wooldridge over Dave Tombleson
Big guys.. came out fast, Tombleson ended up half kneeled against the cage while Wooldridge wailed him with a bunch of punches. Fight ended early first round Ref stoppage.

Cole Martin over Tanner Gould
Gould short notice replacement. Started fast Gould got caught with a big punch that possible broke his nose. Fight went to the ground Went back and forth long enough to get blood everywhere!!! Martin took him back and finished him via rear naked choke.

Luis Nava vs. David Webb
Great sub match. Although Nava was on top most all of the fight Webb did an amazing job from the bottom. Neither competitor was able to submit the other, ended in a draw after 15 min. If it were points Nava would have blown Webb out of the water as he was going for subs non stop.

Dominic Fredrickson over Dan Howard
Awesome fight!!! They both came out hard and fast throwing big punches. Howard ended up on his back, Fredrickson finished him with a kimura. Both guys were first time fighters, cant wait to see them in future events exciting to watch. Both were very game & Howard threw good hands but Fredrickson was just a better wrestler & could very well own the 205 division.

Derrek Russel over Paul Punley
Big boys...expected to see big haymaker punches but Russel finished him with a kimura. Not what I thought I was going to happen but nice to see a big guy working his technique.

James Bowers over Jacob Miller
Sub grappling.. Bowers by second round armbar.

Luis "twice a night" Nava over Dan Gorton
Unbelievable show of endurance. Nava got in the cage for a second time after his 15min submission match. Ref stoppage in first round due to dominating ground & pound.

Dennis Parks over Josh Hamann
Parks by kimura - a very fast paced match as both went after the other.

Kyle Beck over Kyle Hulett
Good fight.. For those that don't know, MEKA's title fights are 5, 5 minute rounds. The went into the 4th round when Beck won by kimura. These two showed great heart... Both were completely exhausted and yet still fought on. When Hulett threw punches in bunches he would stun Beck but he just didn't do enough, he needed to let his hands go. Great job by Beck - not to many Heavyweights could go into the 4th round. Hullet's first fight was better than the best heavyweights in the UFC.

Tremendous heart but just held back.

Kyle Beck MEKA Heavyweight Champion

Jay Shaffer over Jason Evola
Amazing first round... not a second went by when these two were not at each other. I had Shaffer on stand up but Evola with a near submission guillotine. Had the first round 10 to 10, I will rarely ever give a draw but that 1st round I believe was a true draw. Second round came out much like the first one started. Evola's back went to the cage and Shaffer had a big knee that put Evola to the ground...Shaffer then rained down punches and Steve stepped in to stop it. These two were both very conditioned, extremely skilled & came to bang.
Jay Shaffer MEKA 170lb Champion

Bobby Corpuz over Jon Ashworth
Came out strong both fighters giving there all. I had Corpuz squeaking out round one 10-9. Second round fast and furious as well. Corpuz took mount right in front of our table and has hitting Ashworth with some hard shots. Even though Ashworth had his hands up and was defending there were to many punches getting through to let it continue. Ref stoppage at the right time.
Bobby Corpuz MEKA 155lb Champion
