GENESIS "COLD WAR" - December 6th, 2008

Bellevue Community College - Bellevue, Washington

Photos by Mike Renouard

The latest in Matt "The Wizard" Hume's amateur MMA series, GENESIS, took place inside the Bellevue Community College gymnasium with 13 Mixed Martial Arts and 2 Kickboxing bouts, including 3 GENESIS Title Fights plus the opening round of the

155 lb World Grand Prix tournament. A good crowd was on hand for a solid night of fights with athletes representing such gyms as Hume's AMC (Kirkland/Auburn), Brian Johnson's Kickboxing Academy (Olympia), Eastside MMA (Redmond), Alderwood MMA (Lynnwood), Team Quest (Portland), Victory Athletics (Olympia), Gater MMA (Puyallup), United Fight Team (Lacey), and Great Northern Fight Club (Missoula, MT).

The 3 Title fights started with the GENESIS 145 lb MMA Championship in which Drew Brokenshire out of AMC successfully defended his belt by dropping Victory Athletics' Butch McGavern in just 17 seconds. This was followed by AMC's Taurean Washington knocking out Twin Dragon's Justin Larsson in 35 seconds, for the vacant GENESIS 170 lb MMA Championship.  This second KO was a scary one that completely took the wind out of those cheering for a victorious Washington as Larsson was OUT cold for a very long time on the mat and which required a trip to nearby Overlake Hospital for the tough warrior. The word the next day from Twin Dragons Head Coach Scott Bean was that Larsson checked out OK except for a broken nose.

The Final fight of the night was for the GENESIS 135 lb MMA belt and again it was an AMC fighter - Demetrious Johnson -  that took home the title via a 1st Round Rear Naked Choke over Victory Athletic's Forest Seabourne.

The evening also marked the opening of the Western US Regional portion of

the 155 lb Unified World Grand Prix of Mixed Martial Arts tournament.

Essentially, there are 4 four-man regionals: one here in the Pacific Northwest with GENESIS, one which kicked off in Europe November 7th at the Dutch show GLORY 10 with Lightweights Hamid Corassani and Daniel Sharifi moving on in the bracket, one being put together by Monte Cox in January, and one which will be held in Japan by either the Shooto or DEEP promotions. The winner produced in each regional will than go onto Europe to fight in the semifinal round and the winners there than to fight in the US to become the World Grand Prix Champion. The process will be repeated for the 170, 185, 205 and 265 lbs weight classes as well so be on the lookout for more on this very interesting tournament format.

On this evening, four top amateur Northwest lightweights put their name into a hat and the draw produced two random pairings. In the first match, Team Quest's Blaine Macintosh defeated Rico Rough of the United Fight Team by a Rear Naked Choke during the 4th minute of the 1st round.  In the 2nd World Prix fight, AMC's Caros Fodor worked an armbar victory over Kyle Gotzman also in the 1st round.

Fodor and Macintosh will meet at the next GENESIS show with the winner moving onto the Semifinals to be held in Europe later in 2009.
