OPERATION HOMEFRONT & FIGHTNIGHTENTERTAINMENT
took over the Whatcom Community College Pavilion on March
11th for FIGHT NIGHT "Round XIII" Impact, featuring Freddy
Assuncao versus Kit Cope in the main event. The show was held as a charity fundraiser with all excess proceeds
donated to Operation Homefront in support of the troops in
the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
Former UFC Lightweight Champion, Jens "Lil Evil" Pulver
was on hand signing autographs, as well as commentating
with Ron "The Yacman" Yacovetti for the live
broadcast on GoFightLive.tv.
Also
in the house was Len "The Liger" Bentley who is
a contestant in Season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter which
will debut March 30th.
The evening started off with 6 amateur bouts,
including the FNE 135 lb Amateur Championship, followed by
Seattle Hip
Hop group, B.O.S.S. giving an electric performance that got
the crowd ready for the remaining 3 professional fights.
And it was the last of these fights, the main event
between Freddy Assuncao and Kit Cope, that was the fight
of the night and the one that people left the building
talking about. This started out a technical battle on the
feet with both fighters circling and just missing with
high kicks but landing with leg kicks. Midway through the
round, Assuncao caught a Cope kick to his midsection, spun
and kicked out Cope's other leg to get a nifty takedown.
Cope did well to get it quickly back to the feet, and in
the clinch against the cage attacked Assuncao's arm while
Assuncao attempted to get him back down to the mat to no
avail. The round ended with Assuncao landing a superman
punch that did little damage to Cope but sure looked
pretty.
In
the second round, Assuncao came out aggressive, got Cope
against the cage and the eventual takedown. On the ground,
Assuncao got Cope's back and despite a valiant effort by
Cope in defending, including one nice blind elbow throw
that connected, Assuncao was able to submit Cope via Rear
Naked Choke @ 3:47.
Making
his professional debut, Spokane BJJ fighter Joey Becker
ate some serious punches in his guard from Team Quest's
Craig Jackson before he was able to turn it around by
locking on the triangle and getting Jackson to tap late in
the first round.
FNE's next show wil be Sat April 2nd with Fight Night
"Round XIV" Combat at the Caberet inside the
Swinomish Casino in Anacortes WA.
