Evan Dunham
(10-0) looks to make it four wins in a row inside the
Octagon when he faces UFC vet, Tyson Griffin, at UFC
115 in Vancouver, BC June 12th. Dunham,
fighting out of Las Vegas by way of Eugene, holds a KO win
over Per Eklund in his UFC debut, a Decision victory over
Marcus Aurelio, and most recently a slick 3rd round Armbar
win over Efrain Escuerdo that netted him Submission of the
Night honors in January. NW Fightscene's
Spaniard spoke with Evan in the week before his fight with
Griffin about the upcoming bout which will be aired live on Spike
TV.
NW
Fightscene: You got this fight coming up with
Tyson. How's training going?
Evan Dunham:
Everything is going great. I'm just winding down my camp
now. Getting my last hard cardio in and just putting in a
lot of hard work. Been at it for about 12 weeks now.
Getting adjusted to my new camp, it took a couple weeks.
But everything is going great. I feel ready and I'm good
to go.
NWFS: Explain to us the details of
your new camp.
Dunham:
Yeah, just because Tyson and I both train out of Xtreme
Couture, so before this fight I told Tyson that'd I go
somewhere else since he'd been with Randy [Couture]
longer. I
started training at a couple different other places such
as Legion Jiu-jitsu, I've been there for a while so I started training there a little bit more.
Throwdown Gym, Cobra
Kai, and Tapout, just been working at all those places and
put together a real solid camp. Also I got a new
conditioning coach. Just been working with guys, getting
it all fine tuned the first couple weeks, and then the last 10
weeks just hitting it hard.
NWFS: What are your
thoughts on Tyson?
Dunham:
Tyson's a tough guy. He's definitely my toughest opponent
to date. I know a bit about him, he knows a bit about me,
so its going to be a really tough fight for both of us. I
think the winners going to be the one going in there
mentally prepared and who has the best cardio. So I've been
working really hard on that, making sure that I have gas
in the tank for all fifteen minutes. Its going to be a
great fight for the fans to watch. I'm expecting it to be
a real good fight.
NWFS:
With your last win over
Efrain and three in a row now in the UFC, everyone's talking about how
good you are now. Do you think that makes it a little bit
harder now that the cats out of the bag... that people
know you have a
sick ground game, good hands, and a tough jaw?
Dunham:
I don't think it makes it any tougher. Tyson knows what he
knows about me and I'm sure he respects me a lot as a
fighter as I respect him. So I'm sure he's preparing very
hard and so am I. It's no secrets, you know. I really haven't
changed anything but its nice to be
able to fight this top-tier level of a fighter.
NWFS: It seems every time
I talk to you, you have a
tougher fight, and this is your toughest fight to date.
What are your thoughts on that as it keeps going
up and up?
Dunham:
I think its great... If you're
fighting the same level fighter over and over again or
taking a step down then you're staying stagnant. I want to fight the best there
is out there and the only way to do that is to just keep
taking harder and harder fights... it is
a hard fight, my toughest fight yet, and I'm really looking
forward to putting my skills out there.
NWFS: How
do you see this fight ending?
Dunham:
I think its going to go to decision. He's a real tough
kid, nobody's finished him yet, so I think its going to be
a 3 round war with my hand being raised at the end. I
think its going to be all over the mat. I don't think this
fight's going to take place just on the ground or just on
the feet. I think its going to be a knock down, drag out
fight. Its really hard to say how the fights going to go
you know, but it's going to go my way after the fifteen minutes is up.
NWFS: So
is it all training all the time, or do
you do some stuff with family to kind of keep your mental
going? What does a fighter of your caliber do?
Dunham: Well
its nice because this is the first time that I've been in
Vegas that I've actually lived down here. I moved down here
full time with my fiancée Julie and got my dog,
so all my free time is just spent relaxing with them at home
or just watching movies, chilling out. Its been real nice
because I've put more work into this camp than any other
in my career. And it hasn't been as hard because my down time
is more relaxing whereas before I would be sitting in a room
by myself waiting for my next practice. And that can be
strenuous on the mind. But this camp's been great because I
have the time that I do relax and I'm able to fully
embrace that and relax with my fiancée which is nice. We
don't do much. We just hang out, watch TV, that sort of
stuff.
NWFS: So
you're engaged, tying the knot! When did that happen?
Dunham: Well,
a little while after the last fight. I don't know the
exact date
but I'm sure she does. A little while ago. We don't
have a date set or anything like that. But she moved down
with me here and we've been together for about 8
years. So you know, it was about that time. (laughs)
NWFS:
That's awesome. Congratulations on your engagement, good
luck in your fight with the UFC, and thanks for taking the
time to interview with NW Fightscene. You got anybody
you'd like to thank?
Dunham: Yeah,
I'd like to thank my sponsors: Sprawl, TCB, all those guys.
Definitely like to thank all the fans out there for
supporting me. Hopefully everybody will catch our fight.
Its free on Spike, so there's no reason not to see one
of the best fights of the year.
