Elite Warriors Championship - June 2nd, 2007

Portland Expo Center - Portland, Oregon

Review by Steve "Spaniard" Roberts, Photos by Mike Renouard

The Portland Expo Center played host to the debut fight organization Elite Warriors Championship on Saturday night. With an amateur & professional fight card plus a great ring girl staff, the EWC became a new name in the northwest MMA scene. Announcer Mike Pierce, no not the main event Mike Pierce (that's his son), kept the action coming; and Dave Hagen, new referee to the UFC and veteran referee in the Northwest, kept the fighters safe and following the rules.

The Elite Warriors Championship is on the scene and blowing up with another show scheduled for June 30th so keep checking NWFightScene.Com for more info.

EWC is a Pat White and Adam Perkins production.

Amateur Bouts

Bout 1 - 205 lbs

Nate Bethell (Team Chaos) def Jason Cozad (KHJ)

by TKO (Ref Stoppage - Strikes) @ 0:50 Rd 1

A Team Chaos victory came from Nate Bethell who TKO'd Team KHJ fighter Jason Cozad in 50 seconds of round one. Bethell landed a right hand and got the takedown, then lands another punch that freed up mount and the rest was EWC footage as Dave Hagen called the fight.

Bout 2 - 145 lbs

Matt Slosser (Team Chaos) def Neil Jefferson (KHJ) by KO @ 1:16 Rd 2

Team Chaos Teammate Matt Slosser got a knockout victory over Neil Jefferson in the featherweight division. Matt got his head caught in the initial takedown but popped out and threw some body shots. Matt almost got caught in a triangle but slammed Jefferson and landed some hammer fist to loosen up the triangle. The second round was all Slosser who ducked a left hand and got the takedown then came alive with punches from guard even a double handed stomach shot. Slosser turned up the heat landing a couple more stomach punches that opened up a right hand that landed on the jaw and ended Jefferson's night at 1:16 of the 2nd round.

Bout 3 - 145 lbs

Eddie Dahlen (Braveheart) def Joe Zambrano (Team Chaos)

by TKO (Ref Stoppage - Strikes) @ 1:32 Rd 1

Team Chaos went 2-1 as Featherweight fighter Joe Zambrano lost to crowd favorite Eddie Dahlen by TKO due to referee stoppage. Dahlen trains with the undefeated Team Braveheart, and had control of this fight from start to finish.

Professional Bouts

Bout 4 - 155 lbs

Evan Dunham (Wu Training Center) def Mark Daoust (Impact Jiu-jitsu)

by Rear Naked Choke @ 3:46 Rd 1

Professional Lightweight fighter Even Dunham from the Northwest Training Center tapped out Impact Jiu-jitsu fighter Marc Daoust by rear naked choke at 3:46 in round one after eating a hard right early an up kick and almost got caught in a guillotine choke as well. After a restart Evan got the takedown after landing a hard punch and worked to full mount where he landed a huge elbow and right hand that turned Daoust and Evan synched a choke and got the tap.

Bout 5 - 155 lbs

Talon Hoffman (Desert Dogs) def Daniel Berry (Team Fusion Utah)

by Rear Naked Choke @ 0:37 Rd 1

In the co-main event, another professional bout between two tough lightweight fighters went a little like this: Desert Dog fighter Talon Hoffman came out and touched gloves with Team Fusion fighter Daniel Berry, the fighters scrambled to clinch, then Talon rode him down and took mount. Talon rode him to his back in another scramble and sunk a rear naked choke in 37 seconds of round one.

Bout 6 - 170 lbs

Mike Pierce (Braveheart) def Nick Gilardi (Desert Dogs)

by TKO (Doc Stoppage - Cuts) @ 4:54 Rd 2

The main event was a welterweight battle between debuting Pro fighter Mike Pierce from Team Braveheart (who went undefeated and might still be undefeated as a team in all competition) versus a returning pro fighter from the Desert Dog camp Nick Gilardi. After some technical difficulties with the tunes, Pierce was finally brought out to the cage and the action was started. Round one Gilardi stuffed the first take down, but went for a knee and Pierce got the takedown and landed in side mount. Gilardi worked back to feet in a scramble, but Pierce got a single leg takedown and took Gilardi down again this time throwing some knees to the shoulders and a couple to the body. Pierce also landed a couple hammer fist and elbows that got Gilardi moving as Gilardi got back to his feet in another scramble. Fighters went to a clinch with Pierce putting Gilardi into the cage and securing a double leg and slamming Gilardi to the canvas. Gilardi stayed composed and got guard, but round ended.

Round two saw Gilardi looking fresh and opening up with some leg kicks as the two exchanged and pierce landed a couple jabs. Gilardi looked to keep Pierce away with kicks and stuffing the known takedown coming, but Pierce was relentless and got the takedown straight to side mount again. A weird scramble put the fighters back to their feet but Pierce got top position once again this time working out of Gilardi's guard. Gilardi was working a lot through this fight throwing elbows from bottom and working to secure submissions but Pierce stayed tight and controlled the fight. Gilardi at one point even took Pierce's back but Pierce just stood up and dumped Gilardi over the top and took side mount landing some more knees and elbows until referee Dave Hagen saw a cut next to Gilardi's right eye and called a doctor to the cage. The doctor called the fight due to a nerve next to the eye and the cut being too dangerous to fight with giving Mike Pierce his first ever Pro win at 4:54 of round two by TKO.
