ESPN Friday Night Fights returned to the Little Creek Casino July 11th for another night of nationally televised pro boxing, with a stellar fight card promoted by Gary Shaw Productions. The casino's Skookum Creek Events Center was completely sold-out and for good reason as undefeated local favorite Mike "Imagine" Gavronski of Tacoma was the headliner and taking on highly regarded Tureano Johnson for the WBC Continental Americas Middleweight belt. In the opening rounds, Gavronski utilized his height and reach advantage to land some big shots from the outside. In the middle rounds however, Johnson moved in close and scored with uppercuts and short punches. Late in the fight, Gavronski tried to break free and box, but his legs weren't quite there and Johnson continued his assault. After 10 rounds of action, all three judges saw the fight 99-91 for the winner Tureano Johnson. Afterwards, Gavronski went around the ring and waved to his many supporters, getting a nice ovation from the crowd. Gavronski's record is now 14-1-1, while Johnson moves to 15-1.

The televised Co-Feature was for the WBC International Silver Lightweight Title and had Jonathan "La Cobra" Maicelo of Peru taking on California-based Armenian boxer Art Hovhannisyan. Maicelo was the aggressor throughout the fight, using his quickness to move in and out with punches and combos, while Hovhannisyan looked to counter off this aggression with power shots of his own. The fifth round saw a big flurry from Maicelo that put Hovhannisyan in trouble back against the ropes. Hovhannisyan weathered the storm and the bell sounded. A slight problem though as the timer mistakenly made it a 2-minute round. Not many noticed the missing minute within the arena, but the broadcast team certainly did, criticizing the WA State commission. While this was a big mistake (and one that likely won't happen again), the extra minute would not have mattered to the final outcome as this was Maicelo's fight. Hovhannisyan did have his moments, but Maicelo always answered and was superior in landing more punches that did damage. After the 10 rounds, the fight went to the scorecards with two judges seeing it for Maicelo 100-97 & 97-93, while the third inexplicably called it for Hovhannisyan 96-94, giving Maicelo the win by split decision. Maicelo is now 21-1 as professional while Hovhannisyan falls to 17-2-2.

The best fight on the undercard was a 4 round lightweight contest between Arlington WA's Ricardo Maldonado and Guillermo Delgadillo of Walla Walla. This was a high-paced fight throughout that saw both fighters move forward and score with punches up close. Maldonado had a bit more success in landing his shots and was awarded the win via unanimous judges decision 39-37. Maldonado moves to 4-1 as a pro, while Delgadillo falls to 4-7-1.

Another contest that featured two Washington State fighters was in the cruiserweight division and had undefeated Marquise Weston of Tacoma taking on MMA fighter Jared Torgeson, fighting out of Moses Lake WA and making his 3rd appearance as a professional pugilist. A tall Weston had a few inches on Torgeson, and used the size difference plus speed to his advantage by staying on the outside, picking his shots and scoring with power punches. Weston dropped Torgeson in the third with a left hand, but Torgeson dusted himself off and continued. Torgeson was able to snake some big shots through Weston's defense but it was not enough and in the end all three judges saw it 40-35 for Weston. With the win, Weston moves to 3-0 as pro boxer.

Lightweight fighter Kenneth "Bossman" Sims Jr. of Chicago had the only finish of the night, getting a TKO win over Evan Woolsey of Wichita KS when the ringside doctor determined that Woolsey was unable to continue due to cuts before the 3rd round. While Woolsey wanted to continue, it was a good stoppage as this was a one-sided affair with Sims being extremely accurate with his punching and staying away from any offense Woolsey attempted. Sims moves to 3-0 as pro, while Woolsey falls to 2-3.

In the Featherweight division, Eduardo Martinez of Chicago beat Lavale Wilson of North Little Rock AR, winning all 4 rounds unanimously in a competitive fight. Martinez remains undefeated at 3-0, while Wilson moves to 1-4.

In early preliminary action, 2013 Amateur US National Champion Jennifer Hamann of Seattle made her pro debut a successful one with a dominant performance over Montana's Ariel Beck, winning the decision 40-36, 40-35, 40-35 in a 4 round Super Featherweight bout. In the men's middleweight division, Tacoma's Woo Johnson fought Fatlum Zhuta to a majority draw after 4 rounds with one judge seeing it 40-36 for Zhuta, while the other 2 called it even at 38-38.

ESPN's Friday Night Fight series returns to the Little Creek Casino on Fri, August 1st with an event promoted by Goosen Tutor Promotions. The main event has Light Heavyweight contender Thomas Williams Jr. (17-0, 12 KOs) taking on former WBA world champion Gabriel Campillo (23-6-1, 10 KOs). More
