Dirty Boxer's Bar Fights - September 17th, 2011

The Barracuda - Portland, Oregon

Review & Post-fight Interviews by Spaniard, Photos by Paul Garcia

Portland OR - Dirty Boxer Mixed Martial Arts clothing company threw their first MMA event in downtown PDX at the Barracuda Nightclub Sat September 17th. With a list of tough amateurs matched up to fight, a great venue choice, an enthusiastic crowd, and announcer madman Aaron Hall pumping the fans all night, the show was a huge success. Former UFC & Strikeforce fighter Matt "The Law" Lindland was on hand and the Dirty Boxer booth was in high demand giving away a ton of free gear.

The main event pitted fighters from two of the top teams in the NW against each other in Alive MMA's Jason Monroy versus Team Quest's Jason "Pepsi" Novelli at 170lbs. Novelli came out and started quick, using his striking which he is known for, to attempt to take control of the fight, but Monroy went to the clinch and attempted to disrupt this. However, in the second round, Novelli was too much for Monroy and ended the bout by TKO at a 1:41.

Talented Alive MMA prospect, Dylan "The Bull" Adkinson, had a last minute fight change with Redneck Militia fighter Brian Eating stepping up in a Bantamweight bout. The change didn't seem to bother The Bull as he quickly snagged a takedown and leeched his way onto Eating, attempting a rear naked choke and then settling back to mount where he pounded away. Anywhere Eating went, Adkinson was all over him, finally finishing the fight at 2:27 of the first round.

Female MMA fighters Janna Piper from Next Level MMA and Emily Corso from Alive MMA met at 120lbs and started throwing leather from the start. These girls were going at it and trying to finish-PERIOD. As the fight played on, it was clear Corso was getting the better of Piper on the ground and landing strikes here and there that were turning the tide. Corso finally finished the fight in the third round at 2:21 when the ref stepped in and called the bout by TKO.

My pick for "Fight of The Night" would go to the 135 lb bout between debut fighter Humberto Sanchez, out of new gym Fulcrum Jiu Jitsu, and Adrian Lozano from Alive MMA. These two beat the hell out of each other, both landing strikes and Lozano landing some huge knees in the second that forced Sanchez to switch his game plan to getting the fight to the ground. Sanchez got it to the mat in the third and dominated on the ground, finally finishing Lozano by Armbar at 2:50.

Another amazing fight was between Alive MMA's Kody Hammond & Team Quest's Chris Burgett at 155 lbs. This was a close back and forth matchup that had the crowd on their feet the entire fight! Hammond came out attempting to try and stand a bit with Burgett, but he caught a couple punches and his game plan immediately switched to getting the fight to the ground where he was able to working some effective ground and pound. In the end, this won Hammond a split decision.

My funniest KO of the year award goes to independent Heavyweight Forest Young with his 9 second KO of Chuck Langren who didn't seem to have much respect for Young. Langren came out and basically stood there like the movies with his chin out, letting Young hit him in the face as if it didn't hurt until the right one connected and it was lights out for Mister Langren. Young moves to 4-1 with the win and told NWFS in the post-fight interview that he is headed to 503 West Coast Jiu-Jitsu for some formal MMA training. So fair warning to other NW heavyweights, another tough Ammy is on the way!
