Capitol City Cage Fights - July 29th, 2006

Salem National Guard Armory  - Salem, Oregon

Review by Steve "Spaniard" Roberts

On July 29, the Salem Armory played host to the Capitol City Cage Fights,

a Mixed Martial Arts promotion being put on by the ever growing Team Chaos. Capitol City Cage Fights is an amateur event which means no elbows and shorter rounds, but don't you think the fights are anything short of a slug fest as these amateurs are hungry and ready to throw leather. This was evident when Craig Chaffin, an Independent, took on Salem Oregon Team Elite Member Billy Scott. Right from the opening bell these two were set on finishing the fight by knockout. Lefts and rights landing on both ends, but it was newly inducted Team Chaos member, Craig Chaffin that ended the fight by referee stoppage in the second round.

Also new to Team Chaos is Dennis Steckler, this guy showed great technique and good composure when he beat Team Elite member Brian Derekson by referee stoppage in the first round.

In what I would have to say as one of the best finishes of the year, Independent (but something tells me soon to be Team Chaos member) Dave Culbertson took on John Henry from Team Elite. Culbertson showed he had a huge tank of gas throwing huge knees in the clinch and having the stamina to finish after fighting a back-and-forth war. Culbertson won by referee stoppage when referee Dave Hagen called an end to the onslaught in the first round.

The referee of the night was none other then UFC Judge (soon to be a ref for the UFC), and Oregon native Dave Hagen. Hagen is very professional and called great fights all night.

In the co-main event, Portland Oregon's own Team Curt's Ultimate Fighting brought Jetay Barber to the octagon to take on Independent fighter Josh Fram. This fight lasted longer then any other and this was a match up between two serious heavyweights who showed no ounce of quit in them at all. Jetay can really avoid a punch and has a good cage presence while Fram kept trying to thrown huge shots all night. It was Barber who sunk the rear-naked choke in round three to get the victory.

The main event placed Curt's Ultimate Fighting Team member Nick Braker up against Bend Oregon Desert Dog Fight Team member Brian Tyler; this fight opened up with some quick action and instantly taken to the clinch where Tyler landed some knees and then got taken down by Braker. Braker immediately went for position almost taking mount and Tyler's back when Tyler Muscled out and almost pulled off a great reversal that left them standing. Yet, by an unfortunate turn of events, Braker took Tyler down again and during the fall Tyler dislocated his shoulder. Referee Dave Hagen stepped in when he saw it and then the doctor officially ended the fight in the first round. There are rumors of a re-match at DesertBrawl's BaseBrawls show in Bend, Oregon on August 19, which for sure would be a great fight at what promises to be a great event.

All in all the show was a success, and the crew of Team Chaos will be making their mark on Salem Oregon.
