CageSport XXVII - October 5th, 2013

Emerald Queen Casino - Tacoma, Washington

Review by Spaniard, Interviews & Photos by Mike Renouard

Halquist Productions' CageSport XXVII went down Saturday October 5th at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, with a full house of fans on hand for Justin "Ruckus" Harrington, from Combat Sports & Fitness, taking on Harrison "Wolverine" Bevens, from the Academy of Brian Johnson, to see who would become the new CageSport Lightweight Champion. The crowd seemed divided right down the middle when it came time for the main event, but yet one thing was for sure: everyone was anticipating a great fight. This Harrington and Bevens delivered - while it lasted - landing big punches in the first round, throwing everything AND the kitchen sink at each other. Harrington thanked his “Coconut Head” in the post-fight interview with NWFS for being able to stay standing when Bevens was turning it on and Ruckus could see “three of him.” Harrington’s durability definitely did the trick because when Bevens turned an ankle early in the 2nd and stepped back limping, Harrington immediately capitalized and Bevens was in trouble. Harrington took the fight to the mat, triangled Bevens body and it wasn’t long after going to work that he sunk a rear naked choke at 1:32 of the 2nd and a new CageSport champ was born!

Strikeforce vet Cory "The One" Devela out of Victory Athletics made his way back to the cage after more than a 3 year layoff, facing Bulldog MMA's Byron Sutton in the co-main event at 185 lbs. Devela wasted no time getting back into the swing of things and handling business, by immediately hip tossing Byron to canvas and going to work. Sutton was completely overwhelmed as Devela mounted and started to pound away, bloodying Sutton in the process, until referee Steve Newport stepped in and stopped the fight at 3:11 by TKO. Afterwards, promoter Brian Halquist announced that Devela will take on CageSport 185 lb Champ Brent Knopp in a fight for Knopp's belt at CageSport XXVIII on December 7th.

Undefeated 125 lb WMMA fighters Amy Cadwell (White Buffalo Warriors) and Hadley Griffith (Brian Johnson Fight Team) both came out striking. The taller, lankier Griffith was looking to use her reach, while the shorter, stockier Cadwell looked to counter in order to break inside and get the takedown. They both knew how to use their clinch game well but it was Cadwell takedowns that proved the difference. The first was in the first round, after some initial exchanges, Cadwell got the takedown and went to work, punishing Hadley with elbow strikes and punches. Hadley though defended well enough to survive through the round. In the 2nd, it played out similarly with Cadwell moving inside looking for a takedown. Hadley though had other ideas, sinking in a tight standing guillotine choke against the cage that had most of us thinking Cadwell was going to sleep. But somehow Cadwell survived and the round ended. In the final frame, Griffith was effective in landing strikes through the first three minutes, but then Cadwell got her 2nd takedown of the fight, took Griffith's back, and sunk a super tight choke that elicited a tap at 3:21 of the 3rd.

Crowd favorite, Rob “Ironman” Cann with NW Elite Tacoma, made a stellar pro debut performance in his submission victory over BJJ Spokane's Dylan Morgan. Cann scooped up Morgan and executed a big slam midway through the first, landed some big punches, and then sunk a rear naked choke at 3:44 of the 1st. With Cann's superior cage skills, he should just grow from here.

KO of the Night came from CSF's Tyson Cunningham in his debut win as a pro against BJJ Spokane's Kyle Maloney in a welterweight contest. Maloney had the edge in striking on the feet, but Cunningham got a big takedown and started blasting away with elbows and punches at Maloney from his own guard, eventually getting the knockout at 2:43 of the first.

In an entertaining 140 lb catchweight bout, Roseburg Oregon fighter Chaz Gurule - who was returning to the fight game after a 3+ year hiatus - garnered a unanimous decision win over previously undefeated Emanuel Russell of Ivan Salaverry MMA.

Lightweight Ricky "Da Prince" Satterwhite, fighting with the West Coast Fight Team, opened his professional career with a submission win over previously unbeaten Josh Solis of Team Damage. After an initial exchange on the feet, Satterwhite threw a high kick that Solis caught and took them both to the ground. Solis looked to land strikes in Satterwhite's guard, while Satterwhite looked for a submission and although he took a bit of damage getting there, he eventually locked in the triangle from the bottom at 2:47 of the first round.

Yakima MMA's Hector Lopez moved to 2-0 in the flyweight division by getting BJJ Spokane's Soloman Jones to tap to an arm bar at 2:49 of the 2nd round.

Opening the night, Trent Tyler with Brian Johnson's Fight Team scored his first pro win by submitting BJJ of Tacoma's Steve Simpson with a guillotine choke at 1:13 of round 2 in a middleweight contest.

CageSport XXVIII is December 7th at the Emerald Queen Casino and will feature Cory "The One" Devela versus CageSport Middleweight Champion Brent "Mankill" Knopp. Learn more about CageSport and Halquist Productions at HalquistProductions.com.
