Mike Joy submits Roy Bradshaw by Rear Naked Choke in the main event
Cage Warrior Combat returned to The Point Casino on August 3rd with a packed house on hand for a night of exciting Pro/Am MMA action. The main event was originally between Mike Joy, representing Marcelo Alonso BJJ & Team Evolution MMA, and Sports Lab's Cory Vom Baur. However, Vom Baur elected not to fight Joy who came in 10 pounds over at Friday's weigh-ins and last second replacement Roy Bradshaw stepped in for a 150 lb catchweight matchup with Joy. Almost immediately, Bradshaw shot in for a single leg and the fight went to the mat where it was Joy who wound up on top and in an advantageous position. He started working on Bradshaw's arm looking for a submission but Bradshaw threw his legs up and defended with a scissors hold of Joy's head.
Joy eventually broke free, again went to work for an armlock, then transitioned to mount where he threw a couple punches. Bradshaw turned to protect himself and Joy went for Bradshaw's neck for the choke. Bradshaw defended for a bit but Joy got him flattened out, softened him up with a few shots, and sunk the choke getting the tap at 3:13 of the first.
The co-main event featured a couple of pro light heavyweights in Aj Weber of the Full Circle Fight Club & White Buffalo Warrior's Ben Haley. Weber stayed patient and kept his distance from Haley's kicks and punches, moving in to score with his hands when the opportunities presented themselves. Though Haley was eating shots, he seemed unfazed and pressed forward. Finally though, Weber's power was too much & Haley crumpled against the cage from a barrage of heavy bombs and the referee jumped in for a TKO stoppage at 4:42 of the first round.
In a pro lightweight bout, COGA's Tom Wilson submitted Roughhouse MMA's Dustin Praxedes with a first round rear naked choke and moves to 2-0 as a pro. The bout started with Praxedes coming out strong, scoring on the feet and then executing a nice hip toss to get Wilson to the mat. Praxedes looked for a guillotine submission from side mount but Wilson was defending and the fight soon went to standing again. After another exchange, Praxedes grabbed Wilson's neck and dropped to the mat but Wilson cartwheeled out of the submission attempt. After some more standup, Praxedes again executed a hip toss and latched onto Wilson's neck, but Wilson scooted out, took Praxedes back, and sunk in a textbook rear naked choke for the tap at 2:40 of the first.
C3's Brad Fullwood won his pro debut by way of a well-deserved unanimous decision over Roughhouse Burien's Chris Wheaton. Fullwood was effective in getting takedowns throughout the fight and scored points with his ground attack while staying away from Wheaton's power punches on the feet. A game Wheaton connected with numerous leg kicks when the fight was standing but these left himself open to the takedown. In the end, all three judges saw it 30-27 for Fullwood.
Crowd favorite Rob "Ironman" Cann, repping NW Elite Tacoma, sucessfully defended his amateur 145 lb title against a tough Ryan Schecterson of Base Fitmass MMA with a 3rd round armbar submission.
Alex Corrales, fighting out of Bend OR's Victor Submission Academy, won the amateur 125 lb Title via a hard fought unanimous decision over Team Evolution MMA's Luis Gomez in a high-paced entertaining bout.
