Frankie Orr connects with a punch to Eddie Blackburn's face in the main event

Cage Warrior Combat was back at The Point Casino on Sept 14th for CWC VII which saw 3 pro & 5 amateur MMA fights, including one title bout. In the main event, Base Fitmass MMA head Frankie "The Battle Goat" Orr squared off against NW Elite Tacoma head Eddie "One Speed" Blackburn in a 170 lb matchup. This was to be Blackburn's retirement fight and a large contingent of his fans were on hand to cheer him on. As the bout opened, the pair circled each other and it was Orr finding range with jabs and a couple of body kicks.

Blackburn shot in for a takedown but Orr spawled well and got him against the cage, unleashing a series of punches and knees. Blackburn eventually broke off the cage and again they went back to circling each other in the center. The pair traded punches and then Orr landed a wicked liver kick that instantly dropped Blackburn. Orr swarmed with strikes on the ground forcing ref Jeff Hoiby to stop the contest.

Afterwards, the veteran Blackburn was joined by his wife and spoke to the crowd about his retirement as a fighter and symbolically left his gloves in the center of the ring. Blackburn won't be leaving the sport however, continuing on as head trainer of the talented squad of fighters at NW Elite Tacoma.

In the co-main event, "Pscyho" Justin Larsson of Twin Dragons MMA took on Team Mamba's Sabah "The Persian Warrior" Fadai in a pro welterweight matchup. Larsson ducked under a high kick from Fadai in the first minute, held on to the leg and took the fight to the mat. It was Fadai who had position however and he quickly maneuvered to take Larsson's back. Larsson though defended by getting up on all fours with Fadai on his back balancing but not moving an inch. Both held this position for a full 2 minutes or so before Fadai eventually slid to the mat, going for one of Larsson's arms. Larsson got out of it and the pair scrambled with the round ending on the mat with Fadai on top.

In the 2nd, Larsson went in quick for a clinch and a takedown, but the fight quickly bounced back to the feet. Fadai scored with a couple muay thai knees before Larsson clinched up again, got Fadai against the cage and executed a double leg takedown. From there, Larsson worked his ground and pound game from top position, eventually getting Fadai's back, getting his hooks in and throwing down some punishing shots to finish out the frame.

In the final round, a visibly tired Fadai shot in early for a takedown, but Larsson saw it coming and maneuvered his way into a dominant position on the mat. From there, Larsson unloaded with powerful strikes until the referee saw enough and called a stop to the fight at the 1:03 mark of the 3rd. Larsson is next scheduled to fight Andy Paves at CWC IX at the ShoWare Center Nov 2nd.

NW Fightscene's Fight of the Night went to the Pro Middleweight contest between a pair of up and coming talented NW fighters in NW Elite's Alfonso "Big Smooth" Gonzales and Full Circle Fight Club's Carl "Venom" Edwards. As the bout started, both came out throwing hard leather and it was Edwards who started to connect, dropping Gonzales with solid short punches on a number of occasions. Edwards would follow up on the ground briefly but would then disengage, preferring the battle standing and staying away from Gonzales' dangerous submissions. Towards the end of the round, Edwards landed a nice takedown and threw down a couple elbows from side control before the bell sounded.

In the 2nd, again the pair engaged quickly with Edwards throwing a high kick, then moving in, clinching up and executing a beautiful suplex. Gonzales though wound up in top position but Edwards quickly reversed and went for an ankle lock. The pair rolled a 360 on the mat and Gonzales eventually got himself up and on top of Edwards. From there, he worked some punishing ground strikes as he maneuvered Edwards along the cage wall. Again though, Edwards reversed and looked to do damage but before he was able to, Gonzales locked on a triangle choke from the bottom and forced a tap from Edwards. With the win, Gonzales remains undefeated as a pro at 4-0 and is scheduled to fight CJ Marsh at CWC IX at the ShoWare Center Nov 2nd.

Crisis MMA's Nick Burnham & Team Mamba's Andy Padda squared off with the Cage Warrior Combat Amateur 155 lb belt on the line. The pair clinched up early with Burnham working Padda against the cage and then lifting him off his feet for a big takedown. From the bottom, Padda went for an armbar but Burnham shucked it off, and then after another big takedown, Burnham sunk a lightning fast short choke that ended the contest towards the end of the first round.

The amateur fight of the night went to the slugfest between light heavyweight's Keith Boe and Jeff Holcomb. Early in the fight, Boe caught Holcomb with a big left against the cage that put Holcomb down and it looked to be the end as Boe followed with some bombs on the ground. But Holcomb was not to be finished, recovering and as the fight wore on, connecting with big bombs of his own. Boe had the standup edge though in this crowd-pleasing 3 rounder that went the distance, continuously moving forward and scoring with straight punches. The judges all saw it 30-27 for Boe.

Another entertaining battle that went the distance took place between a pair of lightweights in Team Mamba's Dane Newell and Full Circle Fight Club's Dane Drake. After 3 rounds, all 3 judges gave the fight to Newell 29-28.

In a featherweight matchup, Team Mean's Josh Gover stopped Livewire MMA's Trevor Salts with a TKO to strikes on the ground midway through the 2nd round.

Also at featherweight, White Buffalo Warrior's Ardany Mora was too much for Livewire MMA's Jesse Nutting, scoring with takedowns and eventually finishing Nutting with ground and pound in the 2nd round.

CWC 125 lb Amateur Champ Alex Corrales & CWC 145 lb Amateur Champ Rob Cann both receive their belts. Both fighters are turning pro with their next fights.
