Pre-fight interview with Bristol Marunde

Interview by Michael Angelo, Pictures by Mike Renouard

This week, the IFL on Fox Sports Net is showing the fights between

the Seattle Tiger Sharks and the Portland Wolfpack

which took place at the Portland Memorial Coliseum on September 9th.

All Northwest MMA fans should make a point to watch this one-hour episode

to see local NW fighters serving up some world-class fight action on national TV.

NWFS had an opportunity to sit down with Seattle Tiger Shark Bristol Marunde

just before his bout against Matt Horwich.

We wanted to get dialed in with The IFL's fighters from The Great Northwest,

and Bristol was a gracious & fun guy to speak with

NWFS: Bristol, how is it training with coach Mo?

Bristol Marunde: Training with Maurice in a new experience definitely. He's a

character. It's a lot of fun. We're intense in the weight room, but yet we have fun.

We're always joking around. We're focused, but we're having a good time. His

kickboxing is great for all of us. Our whole team, we all started out in wrestling.

So Maurice definitely adds to our game and helps us with the stand up fighting.

NWFS: So is Allan the "Go-to" guy for Jiu-jitsu then?

Marunde: Correct, Allan Goes, he's great with Jiu-jitsu. He's lived it his whole life.

He's a classic Brazilian that grew up doing Jiu-jitsu. He's lived it and breathed it for

whatever, twenty-thirty years. He brings that extra experience. He's a great coach,

so he brings that to his team.

NWFS: Two legends on the mat. How does that make you feel?

Marunde: Yeah! It feels good to have two legends on our team already. So,

it's taking from their experience and putting it into my game, and putting it into use.

NWFS: That's huge. How hard have they been working you for your fight tomorrow?

Marunde: It's been really good to have a team and an organized coach. A lot of

fighters know what I'm talking about, when you're kind of jumping from gym-to-gym

training yourself; you can never train yourself as hard as someone else can. So as a

team, and with a coach, he pushes us harder than we ever have ever worked in the

past. So running on the treadmill, doing our runs, and working out, we should be

in the best shape that we've fought at.

NWFS: What's your funniest experience with these guys so far?

Marunde: I think the funniest thing that happened so far was last night. We were

going around doing promotions at some different bars, and we loaded up shots full

of water, and we were taking these shots and Maurice freaked out. He thought it was

real, so he came over was all pissed off. He thought we were taking shots, but really,

it was just water. We're always joking. We try to get him as much as he gets us.

It's all in good fun.

NWFS: That's great. If you weren't fighting for a living, what would you be doing?

Marunde: I'm definitely interested business. I kind of put the business on hold

right now. I like to do sales. Someday I want to own my own business, and

use skills I learned in school, use my brain the way I'm using my body right now.

That's where I want to take my life, into a business direction. But at the moment

I've got to focus on these fights that are coming up. Gotta win, gotta get that "W".

That's the most important thing right now.

NWFS: Absolutely. When you're not fighting, what do you do for fun?

Marunde: I love going out boating on the lakes. I love anything outdoors. I like

to go out in the wilderness and go camping, hunting. That's a great escape for me too.

Getting in the gym all the time, it can get old. You need a break. You have to escape.

For me getting out in the wilderness & just kind of relaxing and letting it go...

that's my escape.

NWFS: Tell us about working with The IFL.

Marunde: So far working with the IFL is great. It's really exciting. Even for me as a

fighter, it's exciting to see teams. The competition is great. It makes it fun when you

have team mates and you're fighting for a championship for yourself as well as for a

team. It makes us more motivated to win. We're not just winning for ourselves. We're

winning for our teams and our coaches. I think I can speak for all the fighters here,

that we're real interested in building this organization. They've treated us well,

and we're going to give back to the organization as much as they've given to us.

NWFS: Wow, that's really great. What's you're favorite kind of music?

Marunde: I like to bounce around. Lately, I've been liking some slow rock like Hinder,

some Godsmack. I like some good music. When I go train I like rock to get me going.

I like a little crunk music when I'm going out. It's all in good fun.

NWFS: Do you have a web site or a MySpace that you'd like to connect

with your fans through?

Marunde: Yeah, check me out on MySpace. My URL is Myspace.com/bristolcagefighter

NWFS: Perfect. The final question, the most important... blonde, brunette, or red-head?
Marunde: Ha ha - Brunette definitely. [laughter]

NWFS: Thanks Bristol. It was nice to meet you.
Marunde: Thanks a lot. Talk to you later.
