Competing out of the Team Quest camp for The Wolfpack's Middleweight position is Matt "Suave" Horwich. Horwich is a very dangerous opponent with phenomenal submission skills. Ask the 28 year-old his hobbies and without hesitation you'll find out that studying the techniques of the world's greatest fighters is an extreme passion of his. His opponent from the Tokyo Sabres is Kazuhiro Hamanaka, who is coming into this bout with a record of 4 - 4 - 1.
NWFS: We appreciate your time Matt, thanks!
Matt Horwich: You're welcome, always glad to talk to people about training MMA, spirituality, science, whatever. (laughs)
NWFS: You're a big fan of BJ Penn's, and I remember seeing you at his seminar last year in Portland. What did you think of the quality of his material?
Horwich: BJ Penn has always been my hero in MMA, him and Matt Lindland. I learn a lot watching his fights and learned some rad stuff at that seminar! Hopefully I can go to Hilo to train with him and [Renato] Charuto [Verissimo] soon.
NWFS: What did you take away from BJ's seminar?
Horwich: Better guard passes, submissions, butterfly guard sweeps, back mount attacks, mount submissions...
NWFS: What inspired you to begin training, then compete in Mixed Martial Arts?
Horwich: I wanted to be a champion since UFC 1. When I was a kid I always wanted to be a fighter... or rockstar! (laughs)
NWFS: Tell us about your experience with the IFL so far...
Horwich: The IFL has been awesome, they pay us really well, and do a great job of promoting us. I always like hanging out with all the staff, they're awesome people.
NWFS: What's it like training with Matt Lindland and the gang at Team Quest?
Horwich: Awesome! I'm thankful
to have one of the best teams in the world to train with. They're who I owe most of my success too. Great team, great work ethics.
NWFS: What happened in your fight with Jamal Patterson? You've never had a misfortune like that.
Horwich: I made a mistake and got caught early! I should have defended the guillotine before it got locked in. Next time hopefully! (laughs) Third time's a charm!
NWFS: How have you prepared for your next fight against Kazuhiro Hamanaka June 1st. What do you know about him as an opponent, and how do you match up with
him?
Horwich: I know he's an awesome fighter. I'm honored to compete against him in my hometown, where a lot of my family and friends will be to support me.
NWFS: It's been a couple years since you've fought in Washington . Are you excited to compete for all your Northwest fans so close to home?
Horwich: Yeah, I'm glad to fight near home.
NWFS: You currently have eighteen wins. Seventeen by submission! Thirteen or fourteen by choke. Frankly I think that's very impressive, and I love to watch you grapple... but should your opponents consider you one dimensional?
Horwich: I've been getting more and more confident in my stand-up. If they consider me one-dimensional, I'm sorry they're making that mental mistake!
NWFS: Where will we see Matt Horwich in five years? What are your goals?
Horwich: I want to put everything towards being the best middleweight fighter, at least once, by Jesus' Grace.
NWFS: Any shout-outs?
Horwich: Thanks to God and Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and all the awesome friends I've been blessed with, and the fans, and everyone!
NWFS: Thanks for your time - see you at the Everett Battleground! Best of luck!
Horwich: You're welcome! Thank you my friend! Suave Jiu-jitsu - Mark 11:23, The Faith of a Mustard Seed!
