Pre-fight interview with Allan Goes Interview held Sept 8th before Goes' fight with Devin Cole of the Portland Wolfpack. The fight can be seen at 6 PM this Sunday, Oct 8th, on Fox Sports Net (FSN) Interview by Michael Angelo, Pictures by Mike Renouard The name Allan Goes goes back several years in the full contact fighting industry before "No Holds Barred" fighting (NHB) fighting became "Mixed Martial Arts" (MMA). In May of '95, Goes first entered the MMA world at Tokyo Bay Hall where he faced the legendary Frank Shamrock at Pancrase: Eyes of the Beast 4. (The match ended a Draw... The same card also saw Bas Rutten beating Maurice Smith by kneebar)
Since then, Goes has fought for many major MMA, Jiu-jitsu, and grappling events across the globe. He has the distinction of being one of the original Carlson Gracie disciples introducing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to America, and the world. But that was then &
as he fights in The International Fight League. When Goes came to Portland for his IFL bout against Devin Cole of The Portland Wolf Pack, we had the opportunity to sit down and catch up with this historic competitor... NWFS: Allan - what had you been up to before joining the Tiger Sharks? Allan Goes: I've just been training in my two gyms. I run two LA Boxing gyms: Aliso Viejo and Fullerton [California]. I've been training my fighters. I was out of the game for a little while. The last time I fought was in Hawaii, Rumble on the Rock [a kneebar victory over Chris West at ROTR 7 on May 7, 2005]. I'm back in the game again to take care of business.
NWFS: How is it going training with Maurice Smith? Goes: Training with Maurice, it's like increasing my game. Everybody knows if you go to the ground with me, I'm going to finish you. Then everybody expects, "Okay avoid Allan Goes' ground, don't go with Allan Goes on the ground". I went and met Maurice Smith twelve years ago and we were supposed to get together many times, but never did. Finally we got together to train there for 9 months, then I'm back there again. Then I developed my striking. Now, this for me... it's not like before. When I first came over here [to America], I wanted to prove Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was the real martial art, and it's already been proven to the whole world. There's nothing to prove anymore. Now it's just a business. We come in here, take care of business, and go home and enjoy the family.
NWFS: And you're learning from one of the greatest strikers in history & Goes: Oh no doubt. Maurice is one of the greatest strikers in kickboxing and mixed martial arts. His devastating kicks and punching showed everybody that. He changed the mentality of the mixed martial arts. He showed that kick boxers could fight at the time no one really expected any kick boxers to fight.
NWFS: Right. In my opinion he also showed the world how important cardio was. He was the first guy going the length throwing punches and kicks and to see him training with such deadly a Jiu-jitsu guy means your team is going to be dangerous. How prepared is your team for tomorrows event? Goes: Like you said, man Maurice is a cardio machine. He makes us works our cardio like crazy. Today, I've changed my mentality a little bit. Since I've met Maurice we've just been focused on cardio and striking, cardio and striking. That's all we've been doing the last three months of training - cardio and striking, cardio and striking. I have my ground already on, my ground's already more than prepared. I train a little bit of course just to keep the ground sharp. But I focus 90% on striking; punching and kicking. Then you're going to see a new man over there! I'm going to strike him. If I have to, I'm going to kick him. I'm going to take him down, whatever it takes to win - that's what I'm going to do.
NWFS: So you're fighting a big boy, Devin Cole. Are you familiar with his background at all? Goes: I've seen his fights a couple of times. He's more of a brawler / wrestler / big guy. I actually come from 205, I stepped up to fight the heavy weight, because... man, in this life, everybody dies - but not everybody lives! That for me, that's to live. That's having a good time. You know what I mean? I don't care who ever it is. Whoever steps in there 205 or 250 lbs I'm going to go forward to finish and do my job. That's what I come in here for.
NWFS: How is The IFL treating you? Goes: First of all, The IFL came up with the tremendous new idea for mixed martial arts. Too many people think, "Oh, that's a bunch of fighters". We're full contact fighters, and we're athletes besides being a fighter. Because sometimes it's a bad image. "He a fighter, he's a brawler." No, we're not a brawler, we're athletes. We've got to do a job every day. We gotta train like athletes. We gotta run, we gotta lift weights, we gotta swim, we have to take care of our condition every single time. Because - we - are - athletes.
The IFL treats us like no one did ever did before. I really like being part of The IFL. That's what I want to do [until] my retirement. That's my beginning... again, and is going to be my end - right here in The IFL; because I love the promoters, the organization. They treat us like the real athletes, not like many other organizations. I've fought all over the world for many organizations but I've never seen any organization treat a fighter, an athlete, like they should - taking care of them... respect them as a fighter. They have no big shot promoter over here that acts like a big shot promoter. They're just all human beings.
NWFS: That's great, I'm glad to hear that & and we're looking forward to seeing you fight in person tomorrow! Thanks for your time. Goes: My pleasure. Thank you my brother. See you tomorrow.
Allen
Goes is about as nice of a guy as one can be... and let me tell you, he can party as hard as about anyone
- maybe even Bas!
