Milwaukie,
OR - Alive MMA presented another First Friday Fights at the Elks lodge. Bill Bradley and company put together an
excellent fight card with lots of local talent, two amateur title fights and a professional title fight to head the main event. IFL & UFC veteran Matt Horwich submission wrestled anyone willing to take a go with
"Suave" the submission genius. The winner would have won $200 dollars if they made the former IFL champion tap. First out of the gate was a Nacho Libre, a smaller man in size, but huge in heart. The masked man did everything he could to keep his mask on but after a couple noogies and pulls the mask came off and the round ended.
Three more people tried, including FCFF vets Nick Braker & Troy Morin, and both made it the full 5
minutes but
Horwich's noogie control proved too much.
Professional fighter Rex Payne from Alive MMA won a decisive victory over Extreme Outlaw fighter Will Hunt. Hunt landed
a spinning back fist to open the fight followed by a nice right hand but got taken down mounted and pounded with punches and elbows. Hunt caught a finger to the eye and the referee gave him
time. Props to Hunt for continuing after a pretty bad eye gouge with his exact words
"I still can't see, but I'll try" to the ref after the time allowed. The fight was restarted in mount and ended shortly after Rex took
Hunt's back by punching him into a scramble and then sunk a tight Rear Naked Choke at 2:02 of round one to become the new 155lb Professional champion.
The Co-main event was a title match in the 170lb division between Kut Throat Committee fighter Tony Buffa and Alive MMA fighter Chris
"Last Man" Standing. Buffa came out strong with a huge slam takedown. Standing kept Buffa working trying to escape constant submission attempts and strikes from the bottom. Round two was full of reversals and submission attempts by
both until Standing gets the takedown and takes
Buffa's back, sinking a Rear Naked Choke at 2:55 to become the new amateur 170lb Champion.
My choice for fight of the night goes to Oregon Dog Pound fighter Ben Egli and Premier Martial Arts fighter John Bartlett in a Title fight war in the 155lb amateur division. Ben Egli showed why heart can win fights after surviving an onslaught of takedowns, ground and pound, and good hooks from standing that had Egli constantly defending. Egli got top position a couple times but the power and strength of
Bartlett's wrestling skills kept Egli working from his back. This fight was back and forth but clearly going to the cards for Bartlett,
then BAM! Engli looking to reverse Bartlett traps his head as Bartlett
was going for Engli's back. Bartlett taps out to a head-lock type choke that won Ben Egli the 155lb Amateur Champion &
Spaniard's comeback kid award.
Joaquin Rodriguez from Alive MMA spoiled Anthony Ellis's night after the referee stepped in and stopped the fight due strikes with 2 seconds left in round two. These two fighters had an explosive first round with Anthony going for a couple submissions and coming close but taking punishment each time. The final time was 2:58 in round two, calling it close as close can get!
Nate Becker from Mid Valley MMA made short work of Arsenal Combat fighter Jerry Allen sinking a Triangle Choke in 1:15 of the first round. Allen came out strong slamming out of a guillotine, but scrambled his way right into a choke and that was all she wrote.
A submission match between pro fighters Dennis Parks from Armstrong MMA and Marquez Daniels from Next Level Jiu-Jitsu showed the crowd grappling at a professional level as these two went at it for 5 minutes back and forth putting a technical BJJ display on for an appreciative crowd.
Adam Halliday from Armstrong MMA looked strong in a TKO win over Sons of Pain fighter Zach Ziegler. Halliday got the takedown quick but was caught in guillotine attempt by
Ziegler. After escaping, Halliday works to side mount then mount and forces referee
Kelly Whitlock to stop this fight due to strikes at 1:03 in the first round.
Michael Hinds from Arsenal Fight Team got a win after escaping mount and mounting Sons of Pain fighter Derick Maxwell then forcing the back and sinking the RNC at 2:20 of the first round.
Jacob Perkins from the Sons of Pain Fight Team took crowd favorite Scott Stein from Premier Martial Arts in 41
seconds. Stein was hurt in an arm-bar attempt from Perkins.
