The Absolute Chaos crew set up shop in Sumner WA for Absolute Chaos 3 on Sat, Sept 8th with a mixed kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA ammy card that erupted with some incredible fights. The main event with Felipe Rivera (Marcelo Alonso BJJ & Team Srisuk/Jones Jr. Muay Thai) versus David Alexander (Cell Jitsu) was like something out of a movie. Set at 230lbs, both of these fighters swung sledgehammers at each other, with Rivera's body shots able to be heard over the din of the crowd. The first and second rounds Rivera relentlessly stalked Alexander. Any strikes that Alexander managed to land clean just resulted in a smile and forward movement out of Rivera. Alexander even tried a Diaz trash talk approach during the first round but to no avail. By the third round, Rivera began to unleash the heavy hands that have retired other heavyweights, driving Alexander around the ring. 56 seconds in, Rivera finally saw the opening he wanted. A straight 1 2 combo set Alexander dangerously back on his heels and then Rivera stepped deep with the right hand and lifted Alexander off his feet. Out cold and stiff as a board, Alexander flew through the air, hit the canvas, slid five feet across the mat, and under the ropes. And as exciting as this fight was, it wasn't the fight of the night.
The fight of the night honors went to Taki Uluilakepa (Marcelo Alonso BJJ & Team Srisuk/Jones Jr Muay Thai) and Joe Briggs (SSMA/Rude Awakening) who went from being the nicest men in the room to all bad intentions in their 5 round 170lb Muay Thai Title war. The first round was all clinching as Uluilakepa stayed close against the taller Briggs, working knees to Briggs' thighs. As the second round continued in the same vein, Briggs got frustrated with his inability to spin himself off the ropes and away from Uluilakepa's body lock. Briggs tripped them both down to the mat, breaking apart at impact, but Uluilakepa's MMA instinct kicked in and he launched himself onto Briggs. Even with the ref forcing himself between the two, they didn't stop rolling for almost 10 seconds. That exchange seemed to ignite Uluilakepa. He sped up the pace and began looking for blood. Briggs used kicks to try to keep Uluilakepa at bay. In round three, Briggs found his second wind and fought back hard. He landed a huge punch on Uluilakepa, rocking him and forcing an eight-count. Uluilakepa stepped back into the fray, getting a cut along his eyebrow, but never slowing down or backing away.
Already the fight of the night, there were still 2 rounds to go! Not to be outdone by Briggs' big hand in the third, the fourth went easily to Uluilakepa who managed to trap Briggs in the corner of the ring and unleashed an onslaught of punches that whipped the crowd into a frenzy. At one point, it looked like the only thing that kept Briggs upright was a beautiful uppercut from Uluilakepa. As both men tired, Briggs wrapped up his opponent and spun his way out of the corner to the center of the ring to throw some big kicks in an attempt to recapture the round. Even the referee caught a kick to the midsection when he was seperating the fighters. The final round, with everyone in the crowd on their feet, looked to be over just 12 seconds in when Uluilakepa dropped Briggs to the canvas. Even Briggs' corners rushed into the ring thinking the fight was over. But Briggs wasn't done. The ref checked him out, made sure the ring was clear, and set the two warriors back at it. Uluilakepa literally sprinted across the ring, looking to finish Briggs off. Both battled it out for the rest of the round. At the 10 second warning, Briggs went for the head-kick knockout, only to have Uluilakepa roll under it and end in a clinch at the bell. All three judges scored the fight 48-46 in favor of Uluilakepa who went home with the 170 lb Muay Thai belt.
Runner up for fight of the night was the 165lb kickboxing match between Jimmy Williams (Marcelo Alonso BJJ & Team Srisuk/Jones Jr Muay Thai) and Tim Lewis (West Coast Fight Team). These two men unloaded kicks on one another that could have snapped baseball bats in two. Lewis kept Williams at range with kicks for the better part of the first round, Williams blocking most. In round two, Lewis opened up more with his hands. From that point, he and Williams stood toe-to-toe for the rest of the fight, trading blows, and sending it to the judges where Williams won the decision.
Injury of the night came from a very promising MMA battle of Chirs Hogan (GUMMA) and Tyler Maples (Ivan Salaverry MMA). These 160lb fighters moved with the speed and cardio of the most exciting 135 pounders. The stand up was Maples', so Hogan kept working the takedowns and trying to pass Maples' lockdown to win the ground war. The second round started with Hogan moving in for the takedown, lifting Maples off the ground, and swinging him parallel to the mat. As Hogan brought him down, Maples reached out with his hand to break the fall, instead breaking his arm at impact, sustaining a compound fracture. Hogan backed away as quickly as the ref shot in to stop the fight at 1:06 of round two.
Knockout of the night came at just 24 seconds into the first round of a 185lb MMA fight for Luis Barriga (Marcelo Alonso BJJ & Pinnacle Martial Arts) who dropped Mohammad Mustafa with a perfectly placed shin to the jawline. Mustafa woke up when he hit the ground and began to sling punches.. at the ref who had dove in to protect the fighter!
