2011 NW Fightscene MMA Awards - February 19th, 2012

The 2011 NW Fightscene MMA Awards ceremony took place on February 19th, 2012 before a full-house at the Dixie Tavern in downtown Portland. The awards were held after a month plus of nominations and fan voting which saw nearly 12000 votes cast in 19 hotly-contested categories. The top three in terms of votes in each category (top four in the BEST of the BEST category) went to the panel of NW Fightscene judges who then picked the overall winner for that category. NW Fightscene's own Spaniard once again emceed the ceremony, adding to the flavor of the event with his own special brand of humor.

 

 

The BEST of the BEST award for Oregon went to Strikeforce fighter Pat Healy by the dint of his 3 victories in 2011, and for Washington the BEST of the BEST went to Miesha Tate who of course won the Strikeforce 135 lb World Championship in 2011. Gym of the year went to Alive MMA in Oregon & Sikjitsu in Washington. Coach of the year for Oregon was Nick Gilardi (Alive MMA) while UFC fighter Jeff Hougland (Combat Sport & Fitness) won the award for WA State.

 

 

For the first time, the NW Sponsor of the Year category was held with RUFUS KO edging out Klench Kustom Mouthguards & Yellow Jacket Apparel for the award. All three companies contributed enormously to the success of NW Fighters in 2011 and all should be supported! The very special Spanny Award given as recognition to those who have helped further the sport of MMA in the Northwest went this year to UFC Fighter Dennis Hallman for Washington and Fighter Dave Jansen for Oregon State. Other categories included Pro Fight & Amateur Fight of the Year, KO of the Year, & Submission of the Year. Full results, photos & acceptance speeches are below.
